A Rainbow Bee-eater has just taken off from a branch. It's wings are twisted as it rapidly changes direction.
One more Rainbow Bee-eater - love the mid-air twist! #birds #birdphotography

Photographs of birds, mostly from around Nyoongar country (Perth, Western Australia) but also other creatures and places as I find them. All images are my own, mostly taken with a Canon R5 (various lenses). I will block most AI content.

03.11.2025 11:06 β π 88 π 10 π¬ 2 π 0It's bizarrely unsatisfying to get shots like this so easily! After years of needing a combination of genuine skill, luck and bird craft, I got more flight shots today than almost all of last year.

03.11.2025 10:58 β π 69 π 9 π¬ 1 π 0A Rainbow Bee-eater just as it launches itself off a branch.
My favourite flight shot from today - finally learnt how to use pre-capture on my Canon r7. #birds #birdphotography
03.11.2025 10:51 β π 103 π 5 π¬ 4 π 2A Rainbow Bee-eater sitting on a branch.
I did threaten to post many pictures of Rainbow Bee-eaters this Spring. Here's just one that I took today. #birds #birdphotography
03.11.2025 10:44 β π 8 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A gannet at the surface of the water - the fish it has just caught has escaped for a second and is in the air just above the birds snatching beak - will it re-capture the fish or lose it's breakfast entirely?
An Australian Gannet with its catch. Must have missed it on the initial plummet only to chase it up to the surface and catch it there. Once caught they still need to get them into the right position to swallow - here risking losing the fish altogether #birds #birdphotogrpahy
29.10.2025 12:21 β π 74 π 7 π¬ 3 π 03 young tawny frogmouths on a branch. The one one the left is minding it's own business, eyes closed, manifesting log vibes. The one of the right is preening its tail. The one in the MIDDLE is eyeing it's siblings tail with an evil glint in it's eye, and it's mouth open.
Unlike my previous photo of a goshawk, this baby frogmouth is clearly up to no good, and doesn't really care if everyone knows it. (yes - he DID bite that tail feather and no the sibling didn't give a sufficiently aggrieved response. #birds #birdphotography
27.10.2025 07:01 β π 103 π 4 π¬ 1 π 0I have a veterinary degree. 5 years of learning that to anthropomorphosise my patients ranks amongst the greatest evils known to man. Almost as bad as irresponsible prescription of antibiotics and diagnosis by pattern recognition.

27.10.2025 06:56 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A rainbow bee-eater flying just above the ground.
First rainbow bee-eater of the season for me. Only managed one presentable flight shot - so now I will have to go back again and again and again......π #birds #birdphotography
27.10.2025 05:30 β π 229 π 13 π¬ 5 π 0A brown goshawk walking along a branch - it's posture of hunched shoulder, feet that look like it is kicking sand and glowering facial expression look like it has been unfairly maligned of some crime.
A totally innocent Brown Goshawk, who absolutely 100% has nothing to do with the disappearance of all those delicious little birds. #birds #birdphotography (apologies for the anthropomorphism)

And an upright view of the Spinifex Pigeon - you can see how well they blend in against the iron ore rich dirt and rocks of the West Australian desert regions #birds #birdphotography
18.10.2025 07:10 β π 19 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0A reddish brown pigeon with a striking red eye and long, sharp crest bowing in a mating dance.
A male Spinifex Pigeon displaying (and cooing) to his lady love. Normally the most I see of these guys is their little crest behind a rock, or worse their back end as they run away. #birds #birdphotography

13.10.2025 00:10 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0It's a massive risk. If Trump is feeling tetchy then Australia might be targeted - our PBS, free press and good relationships with neighbours including China are all things that Trump could choose to take offence at.
22.09.2025 07:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Yes - I thought this after the first Trump assassination attempt. The sort of angry young men that used to go and shoot up schools - now target prominent figures (possibly because shooting kids is barely worth of comment anymore).
