Submitted a commentary with @tsdav.bsky.social called “How To Lose A Culture War” so fingers crossed it’s well received. More to come from me/us on trans disinfo and the ongoing moral panic one way or another 🤓

Has anyone written something that links FOSTA/SESTA and the uptick in anti-trans legislation in the US?

Already in print please only because I’m on a deadline.

Had a GongFu Cha tasting and tea lesson yesterday thanks to my friend Allie and it was so fuckin cool. Had never had pu’er before and it was such a different experience. One shou and one sheng and came home with some aged white peony tea to try 😇

Terrifying how often someone in our very busy alley seems not to be breathing and we check on them. More terrifying is how nobody else in our or any other building ever checks.

Of course while I’m trying to wrap up one big project where analysis and writing are 90% on me, and another that’s been a labor of love among around a dozen people that I’m senior author on is when i came down with strep.

At least i have some travel to look forward to in a few weeks.

Maps Have Always Been A Colonial Tool of Expansion—Techno-Fascism Is Making It Worse How are the colonial applications of cartography, mixed with growing techno-fascism, helping Donald Trump's expansionist agenda?

Did three peer reviews today, drafted results from that analysis thing that finally worked, reviewed a co author manuscript, submitted an abstract for an invited commentary, met with my masters student, and sketched some details for the book.

I’m SO back. And i need tenure like yesterday

Have to redo it for the last 25 😭

Wow an analysis thing I’ve been fiddling with out of sheer lack of ideas for how to deal with it JUST worked for me. It took off and on trying for basically a year and a half?! And my god if i weren’t so nit picky about details then i could’ve had this out a year ago.

If gender is an ideology, and sex is a reality, and moreover if sex is defined in narrow and ill-informed ways, then even the phrase legal gender recognition falls flat. What then?

We now have some compiled evidence to show LGR improved trans peoples lives just as gender itself is under attack.

06.05.2025 02:16 — 👍 3    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

So what we did find is that LGR is associated with lower rates of gonadectomy, lower suicidality, and increased economic well being. Go figure!

But some governments are trying to make it legally impossible to have one’s gender recognized if it differs from ones ASAB.

06.05.2025 02:13 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Finally some places require gonadectomy for LGR. This amounts to forced sterilization. Even if it’s a procedure a trans person wants, accessing it with discordant identity documents, or while struggling to find and keep a job due to mismatched ID documents, and it becomes a serious catch 22.

06.05.2025 02:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Couple this with discrimination in healthcare because of poor clinical interactions and the knowledge of having to show ID to access services and you get patterns of avoiding care reinforced by experiences of care denial and poor treatment. Yet another cycle that’s difficult to break.

06.05.2025 02:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

The discrimination, especially in hiring, is particularly insidious. Employment issues have cascading effects and can push trans people into participating in illicit economies, but even more so prevents them from getting out even if they want to. A vicious cycle based on one letter in an ID.

06.05.2025 02:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

These are such routine things but are also things many people avoid when they have discordant gender markers on documents. And in some cases it opens you up to even more discrimination or even violence. It can prevent you from getting a job, healthcare, benefits, or even accessing your own records.

06.05.2025 02:13 — 👍 0    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

First is that LGR often shows up in identity documents. When your gender expression and/or identity don’t match the gender marker on your ID it opens up a host of issues, whether you’re buying a lottery ticket, boarding a plane, using a washroom, accessing services, or getting stopped by police.

Rather than parroting results here I’d recommend reading the full paper as it’s open access.

Instead I’ll highlight some of the cascading issues related to legal gender recognition in hopes of highlighting why it’s so important, especially in light of the UK decision and related efforts.
