Locked out of my work's Google services as I didn't respond to the email sent at 11.40 pm on New Years Eve to enroll in something before New Years Day. Love it. 🙃

And Tiny Tim, who did NOT die, was present at the end of the universe, having witnessed every black hole evaporate and every proton decay. Even so, Death would not come.

Rosalind Franklin and the damage of gender harassment Spurred by a recent report on sexual harassment in academia, our columnist revisits a historical case and reflects on what has changed—and what hasn’t

Thinking only of Rosalind Franklin today, and what was stolen from her (and so many other female scientists alongside her).

I think I’ve spent too long looking at linear algebra that I thought this donut shop was celebrating the pseudo-inverse of 90 years.

At some point either cause VC funders or other realise this is a complete waste of money or AI growth falters in another way, its going to make the dot-com crash look like a picnic in comparison?

Spending on AI data centers is so massive that it’s taken a bigger chunk of GDP growth than shopping—and it could crash the American economy As Rusty Foster, author of the widely read media blog Today in Tabs, puts it: “Our economy might just be three AI data centers in a trench coat.”

Why do I point this out? Well in the US, the dogma of hyperscaling to make the next big leap in model performance means capital expenditure on AI was larger than all consumer spending this year.

I wouldn't normally link to an AI paper but the DeepSeek paper in Nature has one astonishing stat in the supplementary. The cost to train on top of the base LLM was below $300k. I think the cost of the original model was only 10x more.
