A quick "whoa, really? that's really fucked up, man" from a white dude to another white dude for expressing a conservative opinion is (sadly) one of the most effective ways to change that white dude's behavior. Not usually the underlying beliefs, but the behavior. It gets in their kitchen.

I think people don't realize how hard it is to persuade someone to run. It's not fun! You can lose years-long friendships, spend hours knocking doors and talking to voters, spend too much of your own money and still lose.

In my county the Democratic party worked their butts off to find candidates for all sorts of small races, and they won almost every one they contested. It's absolutely doable, but it takes a lot of work!
