Thank you to everyone who has shared this. The hearing is over for today. DHS has filed a motion to pretermit (end Guan's asylum application in the US) and have him sent to Uganda - where he'd be at risk of being sent to China. The hearing to decide that will be held 12 January.

ICE Holding Chinese Man Who Documented Uyghur Camps Heng Guan is awaiting an immigration hearing on Monday that could lead to his removal from the U.S. and ultimately land him back in China, according to his lawyer and a New York-based activist group.

In late 2020 a Chinese man called Guan Heng travelled to Xinjiang with our BuzzFeed map of detention facilities to provide ground truth for our work - he provided the first corroborating evidence for many sites.

He escaped to the US - then ICE detained him.

When Mamdani was asked about calling Trump a “despot,” referring to himself as Trump’s “worst nightmare” on the campaign trail, and suggesting Trump had a fascist agenda, Mamdani sidestepped and said he and the president had been clear on their views. He went on to say their meeting did not focus on areas of disagreement, “which there are many,” but on serving New Yorkers. “And I’ve been called much worse than a despot,” Trump chimed in. “It’s not that insulting.” Moments later, another reporter tried to clarify if Mamdani was affirming his view that Trump is a fascist. The mayor-elect started to answer, but Trump cut him off. “That’s ok, you can just say that stuff,” Trump said, turning to him and waving his hand to dismiss it. “It’s easier,” Trump said with a smile. “It’s easier than explaining it.”
