Oil is the most Lovecraftian thing that actually exists. You're telling me that there's a black ichor under the earth, made from the ancient dead, whose burning can realize all the dreams of man but only at the price of slowly returning the earth to its primordial state?

every time you think the new WaPo editorial board can't embarrass itself any more, they manage to find a way.

Left: 'Texas gerrymandering is no big deal!', from August.
Right: 'Maryland gerrymandering is an affront to Western civilization!', from today.

A long and comprehensive opinion, but this jumped out at me: The judge accused the Federal Protective Serviceβ€”which was called in to suppress the protestsβ€”of lying under oath to slander the regular Portland police.😬

DOJ recently admitted that other FPS claims in this case were objectively false.

In a November 6 order, the district court granted the motion to enforce its October 31 order, concluding that the government had failed to either fully fund SNAP for November or to resolve administrative and clerical burdens such that partial payments would be made. It therefore directed the government "to make full SNAP payments ... by utilizing available Section 32 funds in combination with the contingency funds." In the same November 6 order, the district court issued a second temporary restraining order concluding that the government's decision not to use Section 32 funds to issue full SNAP benefits in November was arbitrary and capricious and similarly directing the government to make full payments of SNAP benefits by November 7, including by using the Section 32 fund.
The government filed a notice of appeal and has moved to stay pending appeal the district court's November 6 orders. The government requests a stay on the merits and an administrative stay. We note that in its stay briefing to us, the government has not disputed that it may under 7 U.S.C. Β§ 2257 use the Section 32 fund to cover the provision of SNAP benefits for the month of November. Because the November 6 orders provide the same relief, the government would need to establish that it is entitled to a stay of both orders in order to receive the relief that it requests from being required to make full SNAP payments by utilizing available Section 32 funds in combination with the contingency funds.
The request for an administrative stay is denied. The government's motion for a stay pending appeal remains pending, and we intend to issue a decision on that motion as quickly as possible.

Sen. Markey: Last weekend, I met with Jeff, who is fighting stage 4 lung cancer. He pays $35,000 a year for an affordable care health care plan. If he can't keep that insurance plan, he will have to pay $300,000 a year. Jeff does not have $300,000. These people are afraid, and they're angry.

Democrats asked for ONE THING today to reopen the govt: Keep health insurance subsidies where they are at now for one year. That is IT. Nothing else.

Republicans said no.

So all the lies they tell every day about things Dems are asking for is BS.
Republicans OWN this shutdown.

Maybe if Derrick Van Orden spent less time tweeting and more time actually talking to people in his district, he would know the issues actually affecting his communities. Instead, he is creating fake outrage directed at one of the largest cities in his district. https://bit.ly/4oreFTQ

I have long argued that the single best thing you could do to improve the functioning of the US government is double the salaries of everyone working on Capitol Hill. Serving Congress shouldn’t involve poverty wages in DC. You could attract a much wider set of perspectives netting a better result.

It's difficult to sum up the abject chaos Trump has caused by using people's ability to eat as a bargaining chip. Communication re: SNAP varies widely state by state, and it's wonderful to hear some have gotten November benefits, but many, many millions still haven't. This was totally avoidable.

-100% Washington state
-100% Michigan
-100% California
-Partial Illinois
-Partial North Carolina
-1/2 Vermont

(Note that not everyone in these states received money today because their typical day of the month for benefits may not have passed yet)
