In NYC, we’ve seen steep increases in electric bills, driven by the combo of several power plants closing, NIMBYs blocking the route for new Canadian hydro to be able to come into the market, and increasing demand from data centers. Dems share the blame for a lot of that, but it’s a real problem

How is it that no one in Cornell’s administration has seen _The Godfather Part II_, in which Vito demonstrates both craft and might when Don Fanucci wants to wet his beak? They’re entrusted with inculcating the values of Western Civilization in our youth, yet ignore the classics SMH

I don’t know about that. The first Trump impeachment tied him up and distracted him a great deal. Even a vote to censure will vex him. And there’s the matter of just getting things on the record. The House cannot stand silent, offering implied consent. Make the toads in the GOP senate acquit him.

I thought that about the “perfect phone call” with Zelenskyy in 2019, the “find 11,780 votes” call with the Georgia state officials in 2021, and many, many other outrages before and since.

To understand what was at stake here: in VA, the AG gets to appoint university counsel. From Jim Ryan’s forced resignation to the (mercifully) reject “Compact” to the odious and bizarre “settlement,” UVA has been hamstrung by counsel chosen by the state’s GOP administration. That’s about to change.

Firmly believe one of the ways to improve trust in journalism among young people is to support them in learning to research, write, and report themselves. Even if they never pursue it as a job, it helps to understand the process, and encourages them to engage with their local journalism outlets.

What is happening at Goddard is absolutely devastating. We are losing history. We are losing an incredible amount of human talent, skill, and knowledge. Rebuilding it will be impossible same for same. Industry can not absorb the people or the equipment. This is undoing space science in the US.

hot take is that a lot of Bill Ackman types really are just stupid and petty and it might be worth Zohran briefly meeting with a few of them, and essentially saying “I’m not gonna fucking guillotine you, relax” so that they stop being maximally alarmist to other business guys

I’m not sure if this necessarily shows “Republicans” turning out? A lot of Trump support in NYC is low-information voters who just want someone who’s bold and will do something. That’s how Mamdani started his campaign, by talking to them and asking them about bold policy proposals.

I am no fan of Ackman, but this is how to respond to loss with some level of grace and we should let him rather than constantly dunk

I met someone today who told me she supported Trump last year because “Biden legalized all the drugs.” She meant legal weed in NYC. I explained that’s an NYS law and that it’s still illegal federally. She insisted that laws are signed by presidents. She teaches middle school history

Mamdani should recognize that his election shows that he is wrong on the issues and should abandon his policies and preferences for a bland Park Slope technocratic corporatism.

Yes. At minimum, for most households, there’s at least one other decision maker who might not want or be able to leave. The question is more an indicator of how much drama people are feeling about the election than a predictor of what they’ll actually do.

…finally, the sampling error of the poll makes the margin of error wide enough that — even if we ignore interviewing, selection, and response biases — their projections should be plus or minus several hundred thousand people. Just incredibly sloppy journalism

…but also, projecting from a sample of registered voters who care enough about the election to take a poll to the entire population of NYC. Registered voters are only about 60% of NYC residents (~5.1 million of 8.5 million), and we have every reason to believe they may behave differently /2

I find this distraction discourse unhelpful. Trump's video was appalling and significant and should be analyzed and denounced, and part of the work of politics is to turn it into a major controversy in its own right, as a symbol of Trump's autocratic disdain for the people.
