One of these days a smart fundraiser will write on why the wealth transfer never happens at large and why it’s been theorized since the early 90s.

Health care and recessions every decade-ish are largely the reasons.

Anecdotes do, generationally they don’t.

Good afternoon,

You are receiving this email because you are an alum of the Minnesota cross country / track & field program, and we wanted to provide you with an update regarding Les Bolstad Golf Course.

Earlier today, the docket materials for the June 12-13 Board of Regents meeting were released (link to docket materials) and included in those materials is a proposal from the Planning, Space, and Real Estate group on campus to sell approximately 140.9 acres of the golf course property, which includes the course itself.

Les Bolstad Golf Course is managed and supervised by University Recreation and Wellness, which is a unit within the Office of Student Affairs. It is not operated by Gopher Athletics. However, the proposed sale of the course does have an impact on Gopher Athletics, specifically our cross county teams.

As you know, the course is home to the annual Roy Griak Invitational, which is a long-standing and nationally recognized showcase meet. It also honors the late Minnesota coach Roy Griak, who served the University for more than 50 years as a member of the men's track & field and cross country coaching staff and remained devoted to his alma mater for his entire life.

The 39th staging of the Roy Griak Invitational will be held Sept. 19-20, 2025, at Les Bolstad Golf Course. This competition is a marquee event not only for the sport, but for Gopher Athletics. We take great pride in hosting it annually.

We recognize that the proposed sale of the course has an impact on our student-athletes, teams and on the larger cross country community. We empathize with those groups, and we are committed to continuing the Roy Griak Invitational. Gopher Athletics will work with the coaching staff, event management and other stakeholders to best determine a new location for the Roy Griak Invitational, starting in 2026.

2275 Larpenteur Avenue West, Falcon Heights (approximately 141 acres of the Les Bolstad Golf Course) The area identified for disposition is managed and supervised by University Recreation and Wellness (RecWell). It includes the majority of the Les Bolstad Golf Course, which originally opened in 1928 and is currently used as a public golf facility and for some cross-country activities and Nordic skiing in the winter. The parcel does not include the John W. Mooty Golf Facility, Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, pump house and water tank, or KUOM radio tower, all of which will remain University property. The recommendation to dispose reflects the University’s commitment to prudent financial stewardship and the need to allocate limited resources toward core mission areas. The course requires significant unfunded capital investment, including an over 50-year-old irrigation system and a long-shuttered clubhouse. The 2021 Twin Cities Campus Plan identified the site as a potential opportunity area, and the City of Falcon Heights has proposed future residential redevelopment. The University will follow its standard process by first offering the land to public entities. If there is no interest, the Page 351 of 364 property will be marketed through a competitive RFP. The administration expects to return to the Board with a proposed transaction for review and action in late 2025 or early 2026. This timeline will also ensure that no events planned during 2025 are disrupted.

The U of MN is planning on selling the Les Bolstad Golf Course. All the M Club folks just got an email.
