If it happens in RoP, my vote is for during the final battle of the Last Alliance after Sauron kills Gil-Galad and Elendil and this is the distraction used so that Isildur can cut of the One Ring. A scene like that has been my headcanon ever since Halbrand was revealed as Sauron in Season 1.

From my perspective, you joined a thread about discouraging comments and are using it to grandstand about your views on what you call concrit.

It is very hard to see your comments as anything other than tone deaf considering what the rest of us are discussing.

Your beliefs don’t make you correct.

Again our realities differ on that.

You have used it to preach from your pulpit about the glories of an idealized form of constructive criticism.

The rest of us are talking about how the reality of these comments NOT being constructive or encouraging is why they are unwanted and unhelpful.

The comments everyone else is discussing are not constructive criticism. That is the reason we are discussing them.

We don’t want to be rudely criticized by a rando for something that we shared in an act that benefits them far more than it benefits us. That is the point of this thread.

And it feels like you are trying to define every comment we are discussing as constructive criticism while ignoring all of us saying that these comments aren’t constructive or encouraging.

Because you joined a thread of people talking about how the current criticism that is being experienced is neither constructive nor encouraging.

You are the one trying to push your view of reality on everyone else.

I’m trying to show you that your reality is not universal.

It’s not mutual when it when it goes directly against what we asked for! It’s not bolstering if isn’t wanted! It’s not supportive if it discourages us!

You don’t get to decide what is best for people who have provided you with free entertainment!!!

What part of this is so difficult to grasp?

I don’t want empty praise. We have Kudos if you want to do that.
But if you are going to comment you need to remember that that is your payment to the author who did this for free. It should encourage them to keep going and be excited to do so.
Even one about a typo needs more than just “typo here.”

Everything that is being discussed here is neither helpful nor bolstering and that is our point.

I’ve been reading fanfic online since 1996, long before comment boxes. When they were added it was to encourage and maybe to point out a typo.

You aren’t being helpful, you are being entitled.

It’s really frustrating that this is the hill you want to die on. Have there always been irritating and irreverent people in fandom spaces - yes. That has never been ok. What this is about is how much worse it is for us now. I’m sorry that your normal is terrible but we want better.
