On Independence Day I encourage Republican voters to declare their independence from the GOP like I did over 20 years ago. If they no longer represent your values you should leave the party. It doesn’t mean you have to become a Democrat. Country over party. Happy 4thπŸŽ† Enjoy the Holiday.

Message to all Republicans. If you think the best decision is to leave the the GOP you should do it. I left the party and it was the best thing I ever did. You’ll help your country, support democracy and be remembered as a hero.

Given our current President’s unconstitutional actions against Iran, this seems like a good time to remind you of my voting record on the Iraq War.

I voted NO on authorizing use of military force against Iraq. (Oct 2002)

I voted YES on redeploying troops out of Iraq by July 2007. (Jun 2006)

And my memory lives on. Mostly I hope as a reminder to people that they can also find the courage to do the right thing for our country. Putting country before party shouldn’t be a hollow talking point but a commitment meant to be demonstrated through difficult actions taken for a better world.

Given the changing nature of the national party, it has become a struggle for our leaders to deal with me and for me to deal with them.

My switch was also motivated by the refusal of Senate Republicans to fully fund the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Increasingly, I found myself in disagreement with my party... I understand that many people are more conservative than I am and they form the Republican Party.

is sent to the president. I gave my word to the president that I would not intercept or try to intervene in the signing of that bill. My opposition to the policies of the George W. Bush administration, including concerns over the size of the Bush tax cuts, motivated my party switch.

A little refresher for those of you who may not remember me. On May 24, 2001, I left the Republican Party, with which I had always been affiliated, and became an independent. I made this change and will caucus with the Democrats for organizational purposes once the conference report on the tax bill
