A painting of white and pink peonies in bloom. The flowers take up the lower left portion of the frame through the center. The background is an olive green.

A close up of white and pink peonies painted on an olive green background. The brushstrokes are big but controlled.

The world sucks so hereโ€™s some art! One of my favorite paintings of all time, by the artist Charles Ethan Porter (1847-1923), the first Black artist to become a professional still life painter. This is a unique painting because of the off center composition and negative space. Truly love this piece

Two hung works of art on an off white wall. The print on the left shows two pairs of sneakers in front of a wall of flames over Aztec patterns. The painting on the right is an abstract view of a river valley from an arial perspective, captured in yellows and pinks.

paired an Oโ€™Keeffe landscape with a print by contemporary artist Dewey Tafoya to show the ways that artists have taken inspiration from the present-day American Southwest. Oโ€™Keeffes landscapes were devoid of people, but Tafoya makes art directly about the people who inhabit the land, then & now

Large work of art in a white frame. The art consists of layers of torn and cut paper that is painted with dark browns, blues, and purples at the bottom. The color decreases towards the top of the work.

Close up of layers of paper painted blue, black, and purple. Parts of the paper has been burned and ash collects at the bottom of the piece on the white frame

One of the best parts of my job is working w contemporary artists like Mary Janacek! She makes works out of torn and cut sketchbooks in response to environmental events. This one is about the 2021 Dixie Fire and includes singed paper - the piece deteriorates over time as ash collects in the frame
