Good morning. It’s budget day. I’m going to try and live skeet the proceedings so speakers know where we are at. First is staff presentation. 91 slides.

Volunteering has taken me to a Christmas craft fair today, and I was not at all prepared for this sudden immersion into the cold fluids of the holiday season. The lights, the songs, etc. it’s all quite a lot!

An old travel poster for Palestine.

Hold on, friends! It's going to get spooky! To celebrate 10k followers, I'm answering your questions about Palestinian folklore here in this mega thread.

Have successfully eaten the ramen but further progress will have to wait until the cat moves.

Distressing that we have years of Mark Carney still to go in Canada. β€œConservative, just with less smirking rudeness than Poilievre,” is a pretty bleak pitch for the future here.

🧡 The federal budget, according to @avilewis.ca "represents a massive redistribution of public resources away from people and services that people rely on, and the public sector, and a clear political choice to funnel wealth upward...

"What should poor people be allowed to eat?" seems to be a burning question for those who aren't poor, have never been poor, and can afford to eat what they like, but want to keep poor people from eating anything that tastes really good. "No fresh meat," said Iowa, a few years ago.

It is beyond maddening that the vpd gets to trot out their little letter to Santa Claus budgets time after time, leaving everyone else to make cuts.

Yes! And that goes extra for when different takes of a song are grouped back to back.

Another I really enjoyed recently, written by JosΓ© Luis ZΓ‘rate and translated by @davidbowles.us.
The captain longs to taste the salt-crusted skin of his crew, rats disappear from the ship, and the night is filled with strange dreams as Dracula is carried across the sea.

Photo of two quotes at the beginning of the book.

1 - β€œIf history shows anything, it is that there’s no better way to justify relations founded on violence, to make such relations seem moral, than by reframing them in the language of debtβ€”above all, because it immediately makes it seem that it’s the victim who’s doing something wrong.” - David Graeber, Debt: The First 5,000 Years.

2 - β€œPayback. Revenge. I’m mad.” - James Brown, The Payback.

More recent reading! The Payback, by Kashana Cauley, is a good time, a bit of a heist/caper to hit back at a student loan company and the Debt Police, with their unchecked violence, their peculiar self-help obsession, and their turquoise uniforms.

I really think the Jays win the World Series if IKF takes a better lead off of third base when he got thrown out by Rojas. Leads! The small things matter so much.
