Serving as Editor-in-Chief at Science was fascinating. I greatly enjoyed working with talented and committed editorial, news, graphics, and production staff. But the inside look into scientific publishing and AAAS was also deeply disillusioning.

Very sad news todayβ¦ Joan was director when I joined @IRBBarcelona.org and I owe him this great opportunity. He has led us to become not only a place for excellent science, but also a warm, friendly and collegial environment, a rare combination. We continue in Joanβs spirit, he will be missed!

It was Tony Crowther whose advice I still hold dearly: "Don't worry about the journal, it will still be the same science you are publishing somewhere else."
