15 minutes before A Chinese Ghost Story. Fewer than a dozen of us in the cinema. Disappointed in Edmonton nerds unless 100 of you come hopping in like a line of jiangshi pretty soon.

D(e)ad is an indy charmer about a woman whose father's ghost refuses to haunt her. The comic dialogue snaps. I saw it with an appreciative audience, and now I'm a fan of writer/star Isabella Roland.

It screens again at Metro Cinema on Thursday. Recommended.

They’re also showing the sequels this month, albeit at less attractive times.

I get to see this one again on Wednesday, this time in the cinema.

It’s not objectively a good film, but it has some iconic images and some hilarious gamer elements.

I hope against hope for a Swordsman trilogy screening this coming year.

Have you seen Kung Fu Cult Master with Jet Li? I want an all-day Saturday marathon of crazy wuxia/fantasy/kung fu movies. Of course, I can do that at home. Still...

When someone online asks me to explain a word I've used, I'm torn between genuine admiration for the courage to ask and befuddlement that they didn't just search for the definition.

Quick access to a dictionary is darned near the best thing about the internet.

Love this film. It and its sequels are playing at the local repertory cinema this month. I'm excited to see them
with an appreciative audience.

We've known for ages that opening an essay with a direct quote from the dictionary is a loser move. Now people are doing it with AI summaries.

Hotel Costiera is a fresh cross between The A Team and Leverage. Beautiful locations on the Amalfi Coast and a winning cast elevate the okay writing.

Recommended especially for RPG teams.

I miss the days when Alberta flu and Covid vaccinations were free and easy to acquire.

I've fallen back into my old habit of making single-serving friends while standing in queue, which made me pine for SIFF. An adorable young Korean couple took seats beside me, and we chatted about favorite directors until the emcee took the stage.

It was awesome. I love a full house with a laughing audience. Here's hoping we see more of those this autumn.

Earlier this year, I thought Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Cloud was the craziest anti-capitalist absurdist dark comedy I could see. Park Chan-wook said "hold my beer" and unleashed No Other Choice.

Recommended x2.

Line around the building. Haven’t seen one this long since Anora. Edmonton cinephiles, I’m proud of you.

The world is on fire, and no one can save me, but I get to see the latest Park Chan-wook, so I’ve got that going for me.
