Part of the goal is to rank up with different vendors to unlock better shops (between runs), and part of it is to compete within a given season (genre standard is to wipe you each season to give you new stuff to grind). If you lose your gear, there's usually a free bottom tier kit to scav with.

Usually you have a space between runs with your account's "vault" and thats where your loot goes! So when you go into a run you choose what you bring of your gear into the run, which means you also are choosing how much you're risking. Do you bring good guns, or do you bring basic gear, etc.
