Donald Trump’s Tariff Dealmaker-in-Chief How Howard Lutnick, the Secretary of Commerce, plans to transform government into a money-making enterprise.

Seems like an important thread to pull.

"And how about we get rid of most of the government enumerators, who gather data for the Census Bureau? (They β€œliterally call to Lincoln, Nebraska, and ask what the price of cargo pants is, as if they don’t have a computer.” www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

"Eroding the reliability of economic statistics" is the political objective of the cuts.

Right, which is why the framing is so strange. By the same logic, there's no "political interference" at the State Department because no one is changing the methodology of human rights reports. Perhaps true in the most narrow sense, but missing the bigger picture.

Massive budget cuts don't count as "political interference"?

my bond math is terrible but doesn't that work out to something like a ~50% implied cumulative probability of default? (assuming ~3.9% RFR, 12.5% coupon, and 50% recovery)

The California Legislature passed a state budget today that relies more on borrowing than spending cuts to close a projected $12 billion deficit, aiming to push off difficult decisions about priorities even as that gap is only expected to grow in future years. cal.news/4la8P7A

If the problem is capitalism, then the solution is to assert democratic control over the economy. If the problem is liberalism, then the problem is the possibility of democratic control itself.

Very humbled to be reviewed by Fred Block alongside @itsmccarthy.bsky.social in @dissentmag.bsky.social!

10Y treasury futures price chart from 6pm to midnight 4/8

Absolutelyβ€”maybe something like the October '22 BoE intervention (providing long end liquidity while maintaining a moderately hawkish posture). Perhaps unrelated, here's the 10Y top ticking at the stroke of midnight.
