My daughter is about to move halfway across the country from me, but only 2 hours from my parents. My mom is excited to gift her a 12(?)-serving set of Pfaltzgraff dinnerware my parents haven’t used in the 25 years they’ve been in their house. I hear ya!

I’d like to believe this is a message that would resonate. “FYI, your electric bill is going to go up because Big Tech is moving in and those data centers will chew through electricity. Oh, and by the way, they’re going to suck up your underground water, too.”

The backlash can’t come soon enough!

I have a desire these days to acquire media in physical form. Books, CDs, DVDs. Or to help my library acquire more physical media. Digital is so handy but also so easily disappeared.

UBI always sounds great and I love the idea of all us starting on a level playing field. Reality of our country and culture — and Big Tech driving AI development with no regulation — makes it impossible to implement. And there’s still the environmental consequences of data centers.

I’m curious who is paying for us to make art, grow gardens and care for our children. That sounds lovely but neither Big Tech nor government are going to replace my salary if AI takes my job. You should also check out the energy and water needs before suggesting it can help with the climate crisis.

I live in Ventura County, too. Genuine question. Do you know if any farmers facing crop loss have allowed/can allow the public into fields to pick some produce for ourselves? I know my back wouldn’t hold out long but I’d pick enough for the family and pay the farmer a good rate.

Really wondering how soon hospitals stop applying for social security cards for all newborns. I would not want to be in the business of having to determine parental citizenship for every baby born. As with everything now, this is such unnecessary cruelty and madness.

I was going to go with no, like, never but maybe because my younger is nearing 20 (!!!). Then realized I’m an oddity in the US and had a midwife for both kids. Hospital birth and midwife through a doctor’s office, but midwife nonetheless.

RAGBRAI! I grew up in far eastern Iowa. The ride passed by my rural “neighborhood” a couple times. We’d all go out, sit in lawn chairs, and cheer the riders on for the final new miles before they’d dip their front wheels in the Mississippi. I don’t think of wine barrels as part of that picture. 😉

I know I do this when I truly didn’t mind helping with something. I’m pretty tall and must look approachable at the grocery store so I get asked to fetch things off high shelves for people. Common response to a thank you in that instance is “Of course! Happy to help!” Gen-X, lived all over the U.S.

My husband was reading some scenario this weekend about Port Hueneme getting hit by a nuclear bomb. My response was similar to yours — at least it would be fast.

Zoom, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Google, Microsoft. Maybe if we started sharing the swearing birds, someone might catch on. Probably not but it would feel satisfying for a moment.

So many reasons to pump the brakes. You’d think one rational argument could break through — environmental destruction, water depletion, a workforce that can no longer fix what AI breaks, blackmail(!). But no, it’s new and shiny and they only see dollar signs.

So if the Supreme Court rules that the birthright citizenship case only applies to the one district and not the whole country, then this case would only apply to the Northern District of Texas, right?

Execs are giddy with anticipation about all the humans (they think) they can replace with AI. Short-sighted on their part, in my opinion, and demoralizing for all of us hearing the giddy at every meeting.

I’m also a tech writer and I too would enjoy a contraction or two in my dry content.

Carbajal is my rep. I generally consider him a mild-mannered man. I was beyond pleased to seem him passionate and angry.

Nextdoor is awash in people who don’t tend to be “Get off my lawn” types but who understandably react strongly to what they see on our SoCal neighborhood streets and sidewalks. A group of boys even rode through Von’s one afternoon. A wonder no one was hurt.

Last fall, we drove from Vermont to California in a Pacifica hybrid. In very rural New Mexico, we crossed bumpy train tracks. The dashboard lit up and said the van was going to shut down in 30 seconds. It did. Luckily it started again after ~20 mins. Learned it’s a known issue with wiring. Crazy

I’m going to focus on the editorializing of “praying he’s right.” I’m a consumer and I’m not praying he’s right, because I know he’s not. Maybe counter his argument instead of presenting wishful thinking.

I’m genuinely curious who they think this is supposed to appeal to.
