Guest Rant: Seattle Has Paid the Price of Bruce Harrell’s “Experience” Three city workers have had the full "Bruce Harrell experience." They're done.

Bruce Harrell's biggest selling point is his "experience," but these Seattle city employees want you to know that the price of this experience is too high, and Seattle can't afford to pay it anymore.

Excerpt from article: The law runs against one of the hallmarks of modern public health: that a person’s full participation in society depends on their willingness to follow certain rules. (Want to send your child to public school? They’ll need a measles vaccine. Want to work in a retirement community during flu season? You might have to wear a mask.) The new Idaho law flips that on its head. It not only removes the obligation to follow such rules, it makes the rules themselves illegal. The new law sets Idaho apart from even conservative-leaning South Carolina, where two schools recently quarantined more than 150 unvaccinated children after measles arrived. A person can spread measles for four days before symptoms appear. During the South Carolina schools’ quarantine, five students began to show symptoms, but the quarantine kept them from spreading it, the health department said this month. That precaution would now be illegal in Idaho.

A new Idaho law makes it illegal for state and local governments, private businesses, employers, schools and daycares to require anyone to take a vaccine or receive any other “medical intervention.”

Very interesting. I've always wondered what the deal is with that fence. One time my partner and I were so hungry on our walk so we had to go through the wet field and hop the stupid fence so we wouldn't have to backtrack or walk waaaayyyyy around to get to U village.

The one big donation to Wilson's PAC so far is $75,000 from PROTEC17, the union that represents city employees. As Harrell likes to mention on the campaign trail as an example of his management experience, most city employees ultimately answer to him, and they're backing his opponent.

Good piece by Greg Kim about the impacts of Mayor Harrell's policies toward unsheltered people, now scattered and destabilized by the city's sweeps team. The lede anecdote is about a woman who sees the same unhoused person over and over and, instead of talking to them, reports them to the city.

If Bruce Harrell was elected in large part to figure out Seattle’s unhoused issues, he’s objectively failed. He’s not the right person for the job.

I eat these all the time and never thought about it, but I think it happens to me too. It makes sense that they use powerful stuff to mask the vital wheat gluten taste. I feel like when I used to eat meat, sausage or hot dog flavor would also linger though.

The policy change is bad, but the actual justifications provided by SDOT here are more worrying to me.

“These changes were developed with input from Metro and community stakeholders to balance access for businesses, customers, people biking and walking, and bus service,” SDOT spokesperson Mariam Ali told The Urbanist. “Over the last few months, communications were restarted primarily at the request of Dunn & Hobbes, the owner of the Chophouse property, Hunters Capital, and Madrona Real Estate along with business representatives on 12th Avenue north of Madison Street.”

“While development in the area is meant to maximize the appeal of dense urban living, coming off the impacts of COVID and challenges of major street and sidewalk construction, representatives had specific concerns about customers who drive from the Eastside or neighborhoods like Madison Park and Madrona,” Ali continued. “They are having a hard time getting to their destinations or are confused by the new traffic pattern. After coordinating with Metro on Route 2 bus operations, it seemed reasonable to modify the intersection to signalize the pedestrian crossing per Metro’s request and restore the right-turn from westbound Madison St to Union St for driver access to businesses.”

Who did SDOT listen to? Business and property owners.
Why? Because drivers from *Madrona and the Eastside* are complaining about the new traffic pattern on Madison Street.
