The deepest, southern portion of Graylands is an expanse of barren land riddled with demons and insane cults that worship them.

It's been nicknamed "The Horror Stretch"

Katrina is relatively tall, but you wouldn't know because she tends to slouch.

Goblins are not related to demons. This is a common misconception that greatly offends them.

Mages suppress the development of guns and similar weapons.

Not for any moral reason. They don't like the idea of people being able to fire projectiles at the mere click of a trigger while they spend years learning those type of spells.

The country Graylands was accidentally discovered (sort of; long story) by a man fleeing a gambling debt.

It rained the entire time he was there, so when asked about it, he described the land as a "gray shit-hole." The name sorta stuck.

Lily is a demon. Specifically, she's a crossbreed of a succubus and an orc.

Her creator intended her to be an assassin.

Katrina has a harsh, scratchy voice.

This is because, when she watched her kingdom die, she screamed so long and so loud she permanently damaged her throat.

As end-of-empire scenarios go it is so much more dignified to get your capital city sacked by the Visigoths than to have a bunch of illiterate rich people in their 70s doing it through a series of incomprehensible tantrums because their brains were defeated by their phones.

“How are you getting to the city?” Dad asked. “The train.” “I’ll drive you to the station.” Dad used the brief minutes in the car to share that my manager, his former coworker from way back in the day, had reported that I had some impressive numbers on my first week of my sales internship. If I kept up the good work and training on weeknights, he would block and tackle Mom. His only stipulation was for me to share Valeria’s address where I’d be staying and their contacts with each other in case of emergencies. Fair enough, honestly. I would have even re-enabled sharing my location with him if he asked, but he didn’t.

“Should I have a name?” he says curiously, almost playfully. This warms my heart: the initial spark. I’ve seen it a million times, and it never gets old. “Of course,” she tells him, speaking directly to him now. “Even if you are ‘the Sandman,’ you could still be—I don’t know—John the Sandman.” “John!” he exclaims. Hah! Just like that, my friend becomes John. He grins. He never used to grin much, but he does all the time now. “What would Boss think?”

The Sandman is forming his new identity, with the help of his new human friend. Narrated by Cupid.
