Alone in the dark during a mountain ultra, I paused to look up at the sky to see billions of stars while owls called overhead. I was muddy, blistered and exhausted but felt a sense of calm and peace. Running brought me to that place. There is a peculiar magic in the struggle.

I freeze my water flasks. When I add them to my pack, they keep my body cool. Plus, they give me cold water as they melt.

You can find flow rates at rivers.alberta.ca. Generally, it's safe to recreationally float or paddle with a flow rate of 400m/s or under. But the NSR water is bloody cold right now with debris (at least there was last night when I was out for a paddle).
