I think you’re underestimating how inefficient layaway is for businesses, which ultimately leads to higher prices for consumers.

Walmart stopped layaway and now offers BNPL through Affirm, who doesn’t call the police when a payment is missed. This setup (used responsibly) is better all around.

What you described is credit (accepting payments over a schedule vs upfront), but you’re asking businesses to build collections agencies and underwriting functions, which would increase overhead/ lower profitability.

Credit card companies assume these costs. Credit used responsibly is a good thing!

However, there is an interest rate that is too high and that standard is whether it creates a credit death spiral.

People rich and poor, don’t (shouldn’t?) hold their wealth in cash.

If you encounter an unexpectedly high expense (which is inevitable), credit comes in handy.

Imagine being in-between pay checks, the car needs fixing, and you don’t have the cash.

Miss work? Lose your job? Credit plugs the gap

Something has to break, which means half of America loses access to credit cards as a payments tool.

Which is a bad thing! Access to credit, even at rates that feel moderately high, is critical part of financial health.

Predatory lending happens, so some rate cap makes sense - 10% is wildly too low.

The charge-off rate for non-prime credit card accounts is typically over 10%, which means you’d be charging 10% and losing (more than) 10% - which doesn’t make sense.
