π¨ NEW REPORT π¨
The Alan Turing Institute has visibly struggled, and is now at a critical juncture. The Secretary of State has intervened. What happens next?
A new report for @britishprogress.bsky.social by me and @jujulemons.bsky.social sets out a plan: π§΅

Missionβdriven government needs more than ambition: β―we must rewrite the rules of the game.
Today forβ―@britishprogress.bsky.social, Pedro and I show how mechanism designβ―(ββ―reverse game theoryβ) can help the Government shape markets, crowd in investment and deliver radical reform.

Will throwing more money at British companies actually help our economy?
Politicians keep threatening to direct British savings & pensions to UK equities. But this wonβt fix the underlying reasons for Britainβs low investment & productivity β and could deliver worse returns. π§΅

The Case for Abundance: Why Demand Suppression Wonβt Fix the Cost of Living
The composition of inflation means that the cost of living is more acute for ordinary households. Solving this requires abundance: particularly in the supply of housing and energy.
"[T]he cost of living crisis is the result of a chronic lack of abundance. If we prioritise achieving other goals over boosting our productive capacity, households will continue to feel squeezed in their everyday spending"

Britainβs long-term economic growth and strategic heft depend on winning top-tier scientists, engineers, and technical founders.
Following the government's announcement of a new head-hunting unit for exceptional talent, I wrote for

a broken regulatory state has led to delayed investment, eroded state capacity, powerless politicians, zombified companies and rate-limited startups
it's time to change the model

Rediscovering British Progress
The founding essay of the Centre for British Progress.
Britain once led the way, charting the path for growth, social change, and progress.
We believe it can again. Thatβs why weβre launching @BritishProgress: to help provide a roadmap for government to rediscover progress.

Frustration with government is mounting across western countries, but we must resist the impulse to slash and burn.
The harder, but more courageous, route is one that brings people with us to build effective institutions that last.
03.04.2025 07:52 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0
But the challenge of agency is also about courage.
We need a state that will stand up for its decisions, that will fight for what they believe is right and take responsibility when things go wrong.
Without courage, even the best designed institutions will become impotent.
