Belated day 4 update: we made it to Florida and were greeted with three days of thunderstorms (more thunder than we heard the whole time we were in LA). We are both readjusting to life with humidity (pray for us).

Day 3/4: breakfast tacos in Texas & po' boys in Louisiana. Freddie mauled the plants a little before settling in, but I think they'll make it.

And today we started the Big Move East! We've landed for the evening at the cutest little desert motel and it is toasty out. Stay tuned for more pics of road-trip-Fred.

Now seems like a good time for a #TimelineCleanse

Please enjoy this pic of Fred, ready for our cross-country move four years ago.

Thank God he still likes the car bc we're gearing up for the move back east!

Cutting the NIHβ€”The $8 Trillion Health Care Catastrophe This JAMA Forum discusses the recent budget cuts to National Institutes of Health (NIH), the effects of these cuts on scientific research and health of individuals in the US, and the prospects for cha...

Viewpoint in JAMA details the consequences of the proposed cuts to NIH:

❌15% reduction in new therapies
❌reduction in life expectancy by 83M life years in the US = $8.2T
❌loss of $51B in economic output annually

All to save $20B annually. The math ain't mathin.'

To put these top-line budget numbers in context, cuts of this magnitude would effectively mean no new grants in FY2026. The entire extramural budget would go to existing, continuing grants.

An abject failure of American ambition. And a betrayal of our global leadership in health science innovation.

Searchable database of tangible benefits that federally-funded research gave us. A crowd-sourced site. Health and Well-being. National Security. Prosperity.

Folks at Princeton have put together an aggregator to highlight example of how federally funded research has directly impacted people's lives. They are looking for more studies to highlight, so send along suggestions and help make the benefits of science more visible!

They blame pollution but cut the EPA and clean air and water regulations. They blame poor nutrition but cut SNAP and programs to bring local produce to schools. They blame increased screen time while destroying public infrastructure that connects people. All while they take millions off healthcare.

🚨 Cool new project alert 🚨

WE- you, me, everyone- need to work together to get important science messages out to people.

4 artists & 3 scientists collab'd on these posters. We hope YOU will put them out in your community. Each poster comes w/info about each topic.

We’re now learning that air pollution sneaks in to shape developing brain in children and adolescents. Our latest @hertinglab.bsky.social study looked at brain MRIs from 10,095 children and found that exposure to specific sources of PM2.5 is related to differences in gray matter morphology… (1/2)
