I could not agree more with this take. I think acknowledging use of a chat bot is one thing, but citing it makes no sense whatsoever.

I dreamed Steve Carell fired me last night. Not Michael Scott from The Office, but actor Steve Carell.

I wonder what I did to deserve it.

She got the scholarship. I have no idea if her imperfect essays made the difference, but it raises the question for me about how “authenticity” may, finally, surpass “perfect grammar” as a hallmark of good writing. 5/5

Anyway, I told my daughter I would read each of her essays and give her feedback. After reading them I decided not to give her any feedback at all. It occurred to me that her essays’ imperfections, and there were plenty, were also providing evidence of the essays’ authenticity. 4/5

The nonprofit made clear, several times, that the essays would be checked for plagiarism/use of AI. Now I KNOW this is a load of bull, and I briefly thought about contacting the organization to let them know, if they didn’t already, that there are no 100% accurate AI checkers. 3/5

An example: my daughter recently applied for an academic merit scholarship for a study abroad program through an international nonprofit. She had to write three essays, and for my daughter, this is a form of torture. But she really really wants to go on this trip, so she put her all into it. 2/5

I’ve been thinking a lot about generative AI and the impact that the presence of tools like ChatGPT are going to have on the reception of student writing. I wonder if less perfect writing will become more valued because it’s thought to be authentically written. 1/5

I left X a long time ago and just hung out on LinkedIn, but this feels like the space I should be in to connect with my #educationaldeveloper peers.
