But Bessent avoids actually saying who pays. He makes a “mistake” and says “the check is paid TO the person who receives it...” which Robinson has to correct to “BY the person” and Bessent grudgingly says Yes, but never actually says the importer pays.
These people are so smarmy!

Bessent snivels and avoids answering this simple question. Basically refuses to answer. He says “Check is written to the person who receives it at the dock.”

That is not true, and Eugene Robinson has to ASSUME he meant to say “check is written BY the person.”

Bessent is unable to NOT LIE.
