What makes my heart sing? Cats. Wild places, birds, butterflies, bees, wild flowers... long walks in the woods and by the sea... the moon and the stars… Archaeology, art, folklore, crafts. Peace. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦ 🌻

It was end of July, Lammas-tide had come, and the hay and the corn harvests were being gathered in all around the little hamlet. Despite her nerves and delicate constitution, Mouse wanted desperately to be part of it all, part of the great collective dance of scythe and fork, so Bear's Sisters laid blankets at the edge of the field, under the shade of an apple tree. As the hamlet folk worked, she sat and watched, looking after the precious vittles – the pasties and seed-cakes and bread and cheese, and the cool flasks of buttermilk and stone bottles and jars of ginger beer and cider.
After the laughter and chatter of luncheon, she fell asleep, curled up by the yellow fleabane and the silver mugwort. Above, a stately buzzard circled in the cloudless sky, an old friend of Old Fox and no harm to Mouse. The Bears and hamlet folk waved to him and his wings dipped gold and rust in the heavy, still air.

The small grave of a young girl with a simple cross on top

My sons & I lay flowers on the graves of my parents, Grandparents & Great Grandparents when in Wales

Afterwards we always search the cemetery for the younger residents & save a flower for them

This is Emma Mary Brandling who fell asleep at the age of seven weeks in 1835

The most exciting thing EVER!!! I check our garden web cam regularly for hedgehogs (at least 5 different individuals visit our feeding station) but never in my wildest dreams did I expect to see a FOX CUB!

Not the best footage, but isn't he/she GORGEOUS?! 🦊 #FoxOfTheDay #fox #nature #wildlife

My mental health was 1/10 yday-was struggling to hold on.
If my photos or posts about mental health have ever lifted you, could you maybe like this post? I know it seems needy but I'm trying to change the narrative in my head-find some value in myself. If I've helped someone I can hold on to that x

1/2 The no. of Chiffchaffs in the garden are decreasing now as this year's birds disperse.
'Chaffs are already heading down to the Channel coast on their migration route back to the Mediterranean region (see 2/2).
This bird is very familiar with this bathing spot & how a hinged stalk aids bathing.

Mmmm... the water level is falling in the #Weedypond & that's to be expected.
The strangest thing is the rate at which the willow, hazel and blackthorn trees are shedding their leaves, in the drought conditions.
It looks more like October than the 15th of July.

I see the Blackbirds are nesting again, mused the Greenfinch.
There are still lots of birds nest-building & feeding young in the gardens & hedges of Britain.
Leave the trimmers & strimmers in the shed until Maggie May wakes up in September.
It's a bumper year. Let's make it count.

This Royal Navy issue pocket watch stopped working on the 6th June 1944

The workings damaged by shellfire. The glass screen broken

80 years later, at a cost way in excess of its material worth, a master watch repairer created magic

Family matter, and will be remembered

To all those today who need to hear those words.
So many of us doubt ourselves. It's time to appreciate who we are. And our amazing friends and family members.

After supper, in the blue hour, Old Fox walked to the Sheep church up on the Downs, an old Chapel of Ease.
It was dark inside & deserted but for an elderly hare in the front pew. He was wiping tears away.
It's all so hard, he said, it’s all so hard.
I know, said Old Fox & went to sit with him.

A fluffy white down barn owl feather, light-toast coloured at the top, on a pillow.

Watching barn owls in the pearly midsummer night, & at least one spook-legged owlet, tiptoeing along an oak branch. Found a downy breast feather & tangled it into my hair. Forgot about, & slept in it & woke with it on my pillow, like I’d dreamt the whole thing, & an owl had flown into my bedroom.
