During The One Ring last night (1st Starter Set adventure), one of the players said, β€œWell, I’m not going to be good at intimidating it but I could sing to it and do great.”

There was laughter.

And then me knowing that, actually, later onβ€”-he WILL be able to sing to it and win.

Cuz it’s Tolkien

So...The One Ring..... it's good.

Even though the Starter set (first one) is kind of railroady in many ways, it manages to teach most of the systems and really nails the feel of Tolkien.

Looking forward to getting to the more epic campaign, The Darkening of Mirkwood.

β€œUnconscionable,” Jon thought as he found an email address online for the lead prosecutor, Joseph Dernbach, who was named in the story. Peering through metal-rimmed glasses, Jon opened Gmail on his computer monitor.

β€œMr. Dernbach, don’t play Russian roulette with H’s life,” he wrote. β€œErr on the side of caution. There’s a reason the US government along with many other governments don’t recognise the Taliban. Apply principles of common sense and decency.”

That was it. In five minutes, Jon said, he finished the note, signed his first and last name, pressed send and hoped his plea would make a difference.

Five hours and one minute later, Jon was watching TV with his wife when an email popped up in his inbox. He noticed it on his phone.

β€œGoogle,” the message read, β€œhas received legal process from a Law Enforcement authority compelling the release of information related to your Google Account.”

A retiree wrote this email to a DHS attorney. Within five hours, DHS demanded Google turn over records for his account.

A Kafkaesque form of domestic surveillance, intimidating Americans for lawful speech.

When I was young, you could not only find D&D at the BX, Waldenbooks, and other stores, you could get a lot of other ttrpgs, as well. Before we went to game shops, my parents were getting me all kinds of games in regular places.

Dragon Magazine also was about more than D&D. (Marvelphile!)

one thing that would be cool, when prominent creators turn out to be terrible people, would be if we didn't have to go through this performative dance of insisting that their work was never good in the first place.

I'm not saying this name leaked because Miller wants to see if he can turn the angry white Dems in Minnesota against Latinos as a last ditch effort to sew a divide amongst the "race traitors" that are messing up his mission in MSP but I wouldn't be totally shocked if that was the play.

And, in a game about learning who you are, that level of awareness not only felt like directly translating game mechanics as diagetic (which felt like the wrong answer to me), it was also a level of understanding I didn't think these characters had.

They weren't wrong.
They just weren't for me.

I once played a pbp Promethean game and the other players all had a very different view of how the fiction worked.

Them, talking IC to an NPC: "You see, I can (use mechanic) by stoking my internal alchemical furnace and that will cause X to happen."

Any time I've had, in theatre, improv, or rpgs, what I'd either call "Immersion" or maybe "flow state," if we don't discuss it immediately afterwards, it fades from my memory instantly

We broke down shows right after improv because we'd forget good shows. Bad shows would live in painful detali

I haven't done any of the deep reading, but I've always found someone saying "X breaks immersion" to be absolute bullshit because, while it may be true for you, that line varies wildly

My hot take: ttrpgs aren't good at immersion.

Theatre and improv can be and I think LARP is probably great at it.

Another banger from Jonathan Guyer, who's been on the USAID-Gaza beat for a few years.

If anyone wonders why I really, really hate Joe Biden and his administration? It's because I had to work for them on Gaza. They're evil, evil people who deserve prison.

Michael McKean @MJMcKean posted

Catherine’s knowledge of humanity was always at the center of her comedy, no matter how absurd the character or loopy the material. She could play heartless because she was warm, brainless because she was brilliant, careless because she truly cared. Everyone loved her and everyone learned from her. This is a deep loss.

Upon meeting other Lightbringers:

Good greetings in ill times, Friends!
No person can risk the world alone.
Join others you can share with,
They need not be like you.

If any of the Priests or Lords among those met are hungry
or thirsty or in need of healing the Wind Lord must help them.
If the people were unfairly treated it is the duty of the Orlanth
Wind Lord to investigate, though definitions of this task are
intentionally vague.

There are people with principled takes on the 2nd Amendment, like the 1st.

But if you ever believed that the American Right broadly supported 2nd Amendment rights, as opposed to rights for people who agreed with them, you are a fool.
