and I will just preemptively note that "we criticized trump too!" is a dumb response because 1) as I noted, not that time! and 2) proportionality matters, and although lots of folks pretend otherwise I don't believe anyone is dumb enough that they need me to elaborate on that.

So, yeah, I think folks who spent years pretending the big threat to free speech was some campus conservatives getting sad their peers criticized them, then fell silent when the guy about to be president threatened to imprison people for political speech, have some responsibility for where we are.

I will never forget that FIRE's big report of professors who'd been 'cancelled' included *multiple* profs who'd been fired for sleeping with their (much younger) students. FIRE is more often than not scum, or has been. Even some of their longtime defenders gave up on them.

That being said ...

This reminds me that when Donald Trump spent last fall threatening to imprison people for criticizing the Supreme Court, I couldn't find a word of mention of it from FIRE or any other self-styled free speech organization.

Possible I missed something but they sure weren't saying much.

Remember a few years in it got harder and harder to recruit for the US military after the destruction of Iraq, to keep sending more and more people to Iraq and Afghanistan. Standards kept being lowered, those who had already served were recalled.

This is why I have been so adamant about the social construction of democracy, the social construction of fascism, and the ability for fascism to capture, destroy and reconstitute, crucial cultural, and social reproduction nodes far in advance of the states solidification as a total regime.

They come up with all these euphemisms but LLMs are simply not up to snuff. If we were talking about people and not machines, there’s no way they’d have the chance to keep doing this labor. Anyone who sells you on LLMs doing the work of a human brain needs to have an error rate lower than us

The whole tariff game was only ever intended for Trump's corrupt manipulation--corrupt not just in terms of money, but corrupt in terms of power and favoritism. And since the tariffs collected are his to set, he and his minions can do whatever they want, with whatever favor or fury they like.

I know people want to dismiss This as hyperbolic just as they have other analysis from myself and others within the academic and research world of countering the far right and authoritarianism that has turned out to be correct.

It’s not hyperbolic it’s accurate and we are not at all protected.

Periodic reminder that America is in the consolidation phase of a totalitarian fascist regime.

So they go after education. They go after the schools. The colleges.

They want an ignorant populace.

It is embarrassing how the least qualified people rise to the top in America.

But that’s not an accident. It’s the money. Big money interests pay to get these people in positions of power because they’re malleable, corruptible, and—frankly—intellectually limited.
