Last night’s dream: I was at a marketing workshop led by someone who described his product positioning process as “hocus-focus” and the metaphor for every step was based on robbing a bank and, tbqh, it was more coherent than any actual marketing workshop I’ve had to attend.

Two drawings and two small photos of the cat, Pyaari. The drawing on the left is wearing a blue dupatta. The drawing on the right is in a gold sari with a dupatta on the head.
Pyaari is so decent 🥺

A happy-looking pomeranian walks down the street
A husky is flopped on the pavement in a most lazy fashion. In the corner of the picture you can see a fursuiter standing nearby, but all that’s visible is one paw
A big dog is being tugged down the waterfront path by their harness, but they’re too busy giving the ground a thorough sniff inspection to care
An Aussie shepherd is sprawled on the floor of the S-Bahn train, staring right into my soul in the hope I’ll give them attention
Here are some excellent dogs I saw in Hamburg last week
Shoutout to the one in the last picture, an absolute baby who spent their entire S-Bahn ride going “awrawrarar” and even did a really cute howl at one point

What’s a technology that you think is overhyped?
I’m going to give a sideways answer to this, which is that the venture capital business model needs to be understood as requiring hype. You can go back to the Netscape IPO, and that was the proof point that made venture capital the financial lifeblood of the tech industry.
Venture capital looks at valuations and growth, not necessarily at profit or revenue. So you don’t actually have to invest in technology that works, or that even makes a profit, you simply have to have a narrative that is compelling enough to float those valuations. So you see this repetitive and exhausting hype cycle as a feature in this industry. A couple of years ago, you would have been asking me about the metaverse, then last year, you would have asked me about Web3 and crypto, and for each of these inflection points there’s an Andreessen Horowitz manifesto.
It’s not simply that one piece of technology is overhyped, it’s that hype is a necessary ingredient of the current business ecosystem of the tech industry. We should examine how often the financial incentive for hype is rewarded without any real social returns, without any meaningful progress in technology, without these tools and services and worlds ever actually manifesting. That’s key to understanding the growing chasm between the narrative of techno-optimists and the reality of our tech-encumbered world.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

On the ballot on Election Day, November 4, as Referendum No. 7, will appear the question as to whether the people of Massachusetts will advise their Legislature to ratify the so-called "Child Labor" Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.
If this Amendment is ratified it will give to Congress, 500 miles away, the power-
1. To take away the sovereign rights of the states and destroy local self-government which is the strength of our democracy.
2. To take away from you the control of the education of your children and give it to a political bureau in Wash-ington.
3. To dictate when and how your children shall be allowed to work.
4. To subject your children and your home to the inspection of a federal agent.
The laws of Massachusetts in regard to children are wise and good.
If this amendment passes they can all be done away with.
Massachusetts is only one of forty-eight states. Her influence in Congress is not great and the laws in regard to your children will be dictated by those who live under different conditions and have different ideals.
Wise Child Labor Laws are necessary but the proposed amendment gives the power to Congress to take away the rights of parents and to bring about the nationalization of their children.
IF YOU GIVE THIS POWER TO CONGRESS YOU CAN NEVER
TAKE IT BACK.
The passage of this amendment would be a calamity to the Nation.
Don't be deceived. If you love your children look on the last page of your ballot and put a cross (X) opposite
NO on REFERENDUM 7.
