i guess it probably can't really be a one to one with stocks, since stocks are direct ownership of companies, which predictive markets ofc aren't. so idk maybe what i just said doesn't make any sense lol

finance we are seeing, i.e. "shadow banks" (blackrock, etc) and whatnot, as opposed to the more traditional banking systems? but i'm not too sure, i don't know enough about predictive markets or even really shadow banks atm to make a confident case for that. but it's a thought!

03.12.2025 22:57 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

the rise of stocks was both a way for corporations (new at the time, from individual capitalist owners) to keep up with rising financialization, but also for banks to exert control on those same corporations. i wonder if predictive markets are a similar thing, but keeping up with the new form of...

probably not haha i just happen to be reading up on fictitious capital at the moment! :) right now i'm reading this book which is really good:

and the basic argument is that banks and finance have been inextricable with capital from the get go. they argue that...

03.12.2025 22:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

that said, corporations ended up using stocks as new avenues for finance capital, and they have definitely become deeply entangled with corporate financing. but i wonder if predictive markets ultimately boil down to something similar? (that said i'm not *super* strong on this so maybe i'm missing...

makes profit on commodity sales, and returns it in interest. if the production fails, the loan defaults. but stocks don't really work like that, so marx called them "fictitious." so it's not that they don't fit into capital circulation (they do!) but they are unmoored from production itself

03.12.2025 22:38 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 0    ๐Ÿ” 0    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1    ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

oh yeah for sure! but i think the "fictitious capital" idea is mostly that the *evaluations* of stocks are actually not one-to-one with actual production. for example, loans ultimately are tied to production: industrial-capitalist receives loan, uses it to purchase fixed capital [machines/etc], ...

i am a bit out of my depth here so might be wrong! but would they both be best thought of as "fictitious capital"? that is, capital divorced from actual production. and in that sense, it's just another market to make gains on?

the example that jumps to mind for me is from 2018, so later! but also more around the time i was following games more closely. but sony had their e3 press conference in a tent, and opened with the last of us composer performing on a banjo with dim lighting lol

i guess what i am trying to say is that i think the whole "games are art" thing ultimately just codified into a kind of Prestige AAA Game (of which naughty dog feels perhaps most emblematic). meanwhile Anthology of the Killer can't even get a narrative nomination at the IGF! that kind of game...

the new call of duty to Art Status, in between frantic commercial runs.

obviously i am painting with a broad brush here! ofc there were people who *did* champion works on the margins. but i don't think that entire sphere of games ever benefited from games' art status, honestly, while Naughty Dog...

really i mean all of it! maybe this is a result of the circles i ran in, but when i saw the "games are art" discourse, it really centered on like, ocarina of time. when it veered into the "weird," the weirdest it really got was shadow of the colossus. i like shadow of the colossus! but no one, to...

ofc i do think games are an art form. but i also feel that that whole cultural battle was mostly waged by and on behalf of large corporations who wanted to lend cultural prestige to their multi million dollar IPs, and theyve been perfectly happy to stamp out aesthetic risk from their work and others

02.12.2025 18:23 โ€” ๐Ÿ‘ 184    ๐Ÿ” 52    ๐Ÿ’ฌ 4    ๐Ÿ“Œ 1

the HORSES stuff is obviously ridiculous and depressing, but it is also worth asking ourselves: who has benefited from the "games are art" campaign? it has certainly not been the artgame makers, whose work continues to be shunned and dismissed as "not games"

Totally forgot to share the piece that I wrote for GI.biz - but that's besides the point; The point is that folks at @santaragione.com make very fascinating games and that we should put money where our mouths are and buy Horses (which is bonkers in the best way possible) when it comes out! ๐Ÿด

you can place a checkpoint by taking a deep breath (in real life) in our game. that you can then float back to as you spacewalk in a bubble.

(you can also parkour up uncharted mountains with your friends, of course)

And say we figured out the best way to do that is to do it with better and better A.I. models. Would you pick that?

Roose: Yeah.

Baszucki: Good, so youโ€™re aligning with what we did. High-five.

Roose: But Iโ€™ve also been covering social networks โ€”โ€”

Baszucki: Thank you for supporting our Roblox decision matrix.

Roose: But I also remember 15 years ago when โ€”โ€”

Baszucki: Iโ€™m so glad you guys are aligned with the way we run Roblox. High-five.

Roose: Right, I also remember 15 years ago when Mark Zuckerberg was saying โ€”โ€”

Baszucki: Is this a stealth interview where actually you love everything weโ€™re doing and youโ€™re here to stealthily support it?
