anyways i think you probably know all this stuff, definitely don't mean to come across like i'm giving you information you don't have lol, i guess i feel like the balatro thing usually falls into either "it's horrible because you build poker hands" (silly) or "it's 100% fine" and i wish there was...

e.g. it was shocking to me to learn that the "x2" speed thing you see in all these deckbuilder games was pioneered in the gambling world, because it better keeps you in the zone. if it was a game that felt satisfying to play a single set of i'd feel less freaked out by it lol but it's hard to stop!

how the game works will break the spell for her. which ofc it never does. this is probably clear already but my concern with balatro is not its uncertainty or its ~aesthetics of gambling~ but the many things it does to make you fall into "the zone" and keep you there...

i think that's fair, but i think i also might be slightly less optimistic of the benefits of awareness / inoculation. there's a part of the schull book where someone with a gambling addiction decides to work for the very company that is preying on her, thinking that understanding ...

ahh i see, like if people are going to be drawn to this anyways it's better to experiment with it in a way that doesn't risk financial ruin basically? (regardless of the morality of the designs of these things in the first place, basically?)

but i think those same interrogations should be extended beyond merely balatro, too, to games that don't happen to involve poker hands lol

i don't think localthunk is really trying to reproduce machine zone slot techniques, and definitely the added element of monetary predation raises the stakes to a new low, but i do think balatro's alarmingly effective at creating smooth brain machine zone in ways that are worth interrogating
