Here's the book review that came out of all this: econsoc.mpifg.de/50610/econso... (p. 19-21). Thanks again to @rilinger.bsky.social for an excellent read and to the Andalucian people for their hospitality during the black out.

Empirically, the paper demonstrates the argument by showing how the modular division of labor among designers of auction markets for electricity in California persistently created new opportunities and incentives for destructive gaming. The paper expands on themes from my book, Failure by Design

Market Design as Organizational Problem: Explaining System Failures in Platform Markets | American Journal of Sociology: Vol 0, No ja

I am very excited to see "Market Design as Organizational Problem" out at AJS: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1.... How do we explain systemic levels of destructive behavior in platform markets (system failures)? I suggest that we should focus on the organization that

Trump Orders Gutting of 7 Agencies, Including Voice of America’s Parent The order targeting the agencies, largely obscure entities that address issues like labor mediation and homelessness prevention, appeared to test the bounds of the president’s power.

Do you value your library?

Trump just ordered the dismantling of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the key source of federal support for libraries.

Libraries are vital social infrastructure, the foundations of an open, democratic society. Gutting them means gutting our own communities.

An organizational sociology of digital markets offers both - and would allow us to talk about distributional outcomes in these markets in ways that don’t reduce to what applied economists are already doing. What do you think?

I think this is a particularly interesting direction for future research as classic questions about the social dynamics in markets have been somewhat exhausted and economic sociology needs a new paradigm that doesn’t just push against an outdated view of neoclassic economics.

Algorithmic Management and the Social Order of Digital Markets - Theory and Society Platform companies use techniques of algorithmic management to control their users. Though digital marketplaces vary in their use of these techniques, few studies have asked why. This question is theo...

In doi.org/10.1007/s111... I show that we can explain variation in the operation of digital markets by looking at the design work in the companies building these platforms. There is a whole frontier of research about the organizational dynamics behind failures in digital markets.
