yes. it's a car-centric lens. if current driving convenience is the thing to measure against, major improvements to a public transpo system (that would get folks out of their cars) just can't compete. Transpo improvements should not begin w/ car primacy. it's a bigger picture.

#WAleg has passed two separate bills to ensure the state has oversight of the detention center for serious health violations. Tuberculosis outbreak checks all the boxes. So why is DOH just directing inquiries to ICE? Why is DOH not taking action?

After a child care worker is detained by ICE, a community is left reeling β€’ Washington State Standard Nicolle Orozco Forero was one of the few immigrant women who provide child care for American children with disabilities. Then she and her seriously ill son were taken into ICE custody.

A textbook example of how the excesses of immigration enforcement harm US citizens, their families, and their communities.

If a bill is so bad that you have to exempt entire states from its consequences to win the votes you needβ€”just don't pass the bill!

Why do people in Washington state deserve Medicaid & SNAP cuts, but others don't?

This is plain wrong, and it's just no way to legislate.

🚨 The Senate parliamentarian just disqualified a bunch of provisions from the GOP bill β€” including Medicaid provider tax language, funding restrictions based on immigration status, spread pricing and one prohibition on gender-affirming care. List via a Democratic budget aide:

Washington cherry growers struggle to find pickers The threat of federal agents raiding orchards is forcing a labor shortage that has caused some Washington producers to leave cherries unpicked or delay their harvests until fruit gets over ripe, which...

The cherry worker shortage is a policy choice. Growers and workers have been trying to address it via the (flawed) Farm Workforce Modernization Act for 5 years. Unsuccessfully. Congress wants this failure.

it should go without saying but you really cannot run a country, or really any organization, like this. you cannot lurch wildly from pole to pole every four years or every four days. you cannot rip up deals and seek deals and then blow up the people you were seeking to re-deal with. doesn't work

We’re announcing new legislation β€” the No Secret Police Act (SB 627) β€” to ban local/state/federal law enforcement, w/ some exceptions, from covering their faces when interacting w/ the public & require them to wear identifying info.

The secret police behavior we’re seeing destroys trust & must end🧡

This is still one of the best ways to limit deportations. Stop collaborations between ICE, local police departments, sheriffs, and county jails.

The advent of germ theory, vaccines, sanitation, and antibiotics, in this view, indirectly lead to an increase in social services, and a decrease in capital punishment, murder, slavery, and torture. In effect, it raised the value of human life in human eyes.

Elon Musk says the US government is doing a "quiet trial" of the "gold card," a flatly illegal concept billed as letting people buy a green card for $5 million.

No law allows this. The closest thing, EB-5, requires investment in a US business that creates at least 10 new jobs.

The Trump administration is carrying out a large-scale operation across the DC area targeting *restaurants,* clearly trying to round up people for working under the table without papers.

but how can we be *sure* that building a lot more homes will make California a more affordable place to live??

I led the DOJ working group that developed regulations for prisons and jails to combat sexual abuse as required by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) β€” a bill that, incidentally, passed Congress unanimously.

I suspect this decision may be lawless; regardless, it is a travesty.

U.S. Rep. Randall warns of β€˜war on immigrants’ after visiting ICE center in Tacoma The number of people held at the Northwest ICE Processing Center in Tacoma has jumped almost 50% in the past month, according to numbers provided to a Washington congressmember.

I remember when Francis became Pope and his first official visit outside of Rome was to Lampedusa to pray for migrants who had died / been killed at sea. It meant so much to me, especially as the world embraced that kind of cruelty as the way forward.

"'"Where is your brother?" His blood cries out to me, says the Lord. This is not a question directed to others; it is a question directed to me, to you, to each of us. These brothers and sisters of ours were trying to escape difficult situations to find some serenity and peace; they were looking for a better place for themselves and their families, but instead they found death. How often do such people fail to find understanding, fail to find acceptance, fail to find solidarity."

I do mourn Pope Francis. Though I’m no longer a practicing Catholic, my remaining tether was to the kind of faith he modeled, especially in his care for migrants, for refugees, for social justice, and against war and genocide.
Hope @zeets.bsky.social doesn’t mind my sharing this.
