yes. it's a car-centric lens. if current driving convenience is the thing to measure against, major improvements to a public transpo system (that would get folks out of their cars) just can't compete. Transpo improvements should not begin w/ car primacy. it's a bigger picture.

#WAleg has passed two separate bills to ensure the state has oversight of the detention center for serious health violations. Tuberculosis outbreak checks all the boxes. So why is DOH just directing inquiries to ICE? Why is DOH not taking action?

Why do people in Washington state deserve Medicaid & SNAP cuts, but others don't?
This is plain wrong, and it's just no way to legislate.

The cherry worker shortage is a policy choice. Growers and workers have been trying to address it via the (flawed) Farm Workforce Modernization Act for 5 years. Unsuccessfully. Congress wants this failure.

it should go without saying but you really cannot run a country, or really any organization, like this. you cannot lurch wildly from pole to pole every four years or every four days. you cannot rip up deals and seek deals and then blow up the people you were seeking to re-deal with. doesn't work

The advent of germ theory, vaccines, sanitation, and antibiotics, in this view, indirectly lead to an increase in social services, and a decrease in capital punishment, murder, slavery, and torture. In effect, it raised the value of human life in human eyes.

"We're doing a quiet trial to make sure the system works properly. Once it is fully tested, it will be rolled out to the public with an announcement by the President." May 11
Elon Musk says the US government is doing a "quiet trial" of the "gold card," a flatly illegal concept billed as letting people buy a green card for $5 million.
No law allows this. The closest thing, EB-5, requires investment in a US business that creates at least 10 new jobs.

I remember when Francis became Pope and his first official visit outside of Rome was to Lampedusa to pray for migrants who had died / been killed at sea. It meant so much to me, especially as the world embraced that kind of cruelty as the way forward.
"'"Where is your brother?" His blood cries out to me, says the Lord. This is not a question directed to others; it is a question directed to me, to you, to each of us. These brothers and sisters of ours were trying to escape difficult situations to find some serenity and peace; they were looking for a better place for themselves and their families, but instead they found death. How often do such people fail to find understanding, fail to find acceptance, fail to find solidarity."
I do mourn Pope Francis. Though Iβm no longer a practicing Catholic, my remaining tether was to the kind of faith he modeled, especially in his care for migrants, for refugees, for social justice, and against war and genocide.
Hope @zeets.bsky.social doesnβt mind my sharing this.
