The Sora AI thing is proof of something very important: The technology itself is useless without the ability to use the likenesses of real, living, unpredictable people, and the art they create. And the only way to get those likenesses or that art is to summarily steal it.

I took some harness belts from her car seat and looped them through the milk crate (and added another belt from a @kingcountymetro.bsky.social lanyard forโฆ I donโt know, aesthetics? But I had to bike w her for a while to be sure she wouldnโt jump out, and I still worry about belting her in.

But for now: I rigged a #CrustBikes cargo fork to a Kona e-bike, screwed in a tough milk crate w a bunch of rubber gaskets and washers and zip ties for extra security, and found some structured baskets that I lined with memory foam pillows (thank you Goodwill) for comfort and to keep things immobile

I think I need to do a video, Iโve been through SO much trial and error bc she has v particular needs and I want her to be as safe as possible and I still feel a few steps away from my goal setup. (I try to stick to quiet residential streets or separated bike lanes JIC.)

Yes some drivers are irresponsible, but some roads are confusing or have outdated design. If roads are self-explanatory w approp. speed limits & separate non-drivers from drivers, for ex., we run less risk of harming each other or ourselves. ALSO makes travel more reliable & simpler 4 everyone. 4/4
30.09.2025 22:49 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0
That's the Safe System Approach, which more DOTs are adopting. It acknowledges that a lot of factors affect safety, and that ppl can make mistakes while traveling. Proactive shifts in road design, speeds, vehicles, post-crash care, behavior and land use together improve safety outcomes. 3/4
30.09.2025 22:49 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
The guide illustrates futility of some safety mgmt strategies. We can shame drivers for being irresponsible (which doesn't necessarily change behavior longterm), yes, but we can ALSO change other elements of the system to reduce how much damage drivers can do to themselves and others NOW. 2/4
30.09.2025 22:49 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
๐ฏTravelers are responsible for each other's safety. But we often saddle ppl walk/bike/rolling - those not driving 1,000s-pound cars - w disproportionate responsibility for their own safety.
If we can't rely on drivers to be responsible & the culture devalues non-drivers, what are our options? 1/4
30.09.2025 22:49 โ ๐ 17 ๐ 4 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 1
The catch: Not every route has that slow, quiet travel option. Some of us live or travel places where itโs *never* an option.
We all walk or roll at some point in our day, & sometimes itโs just nice to be driven (ty transit). Building streets w a little travel choice wiggle room? Not a radical ask.

A small brown dog in a green coat is sitting in a basket on the front of a bicycle, facing forward and looking to the right. It is daytime and there is rain on the bicycle.
#WeekWithoutDriving off to a wet but fun start with a trip to/from the vet for vaccines! (If we do enough rainy rides maybe sheโll even let me put her rain hat and goggles on.) Finding bike parking was a bit tough but sticking 95% of the time to quiet local streets w lots of speed bumps was great!

YES! Any city that cares about tourism should care about making it easy to get around without a car. (You hope they care about their residents, too, but incentivizing investments improving networks for tourists end up improving mobility for residents too.)
24.09.2025 18:32 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0
Best case scenario: You realize how much you enjoy walking, biking, rolling or taking transit for one or more of your regular trips.
But a valuable outcome is also recognizing you like traveling that way *in theory* but youre aware of barriers to taking those trips (and tell your city about them).

Solid opportunity to better understand how easy traveling actually is where you live. The same route that works for someone driving might be a headache (or worse) for people who walk, bike or roll.
