Having set calendars, after school sports wagged the dog. Also, buses had to do 3 runs to maximize use. And K-6 students couldn't be too early but HS could be and they were always the first run, K6 next, middle school last (9 am start). Yes, people were aware of the research, but...

The biggest factors in our calendar development was ending the semester in Dec. (no finals and projects to work on), and having equal-ish length semesters. In AZ we wanted to end in May as temps rise in June. Add fall break and other holidays, the school year crept earlier and earlier.
