I know there's a lot competing for your attention this Giving Tuesday, but it's also my birthday on Thursday, and I'm aiming to support Charlottesville's City of Promise. Can you help?

Also, it was a real wakeup call to do that math. Time really does fly when you're having fun giving people extended time to prove they know something when the time it takes is irrelevant to the task at hand!

In over 15 years of teaching kids and adults, I've found most people will need some type of accommodation in their academic lives. Rich people are just more likely to ask for them.

I love whenever articles like this are all β€œSEE THE UNREASONABLE ANGRY DEMANDS OF THIS SJW TEACHER” and the teacher’s comment are always β€œplease actually cite sources and try not to call your classmates demonic”

Today I’m grateful my family’s big meal is at 1pm so that now I’m napped, in jammies, and sitting on the couch with leftovers and Home Alone.

The COVID political backlash disappeared Turns out the pandemic didn't break the Democratic Party

While it's refreshing to see folks admit when the conventional wisdom they've help established is wrong, the results about views on public health in this country are terrifying.

As you point out, we can't be sure, but I think that schools as a whole have scaled back less from accountability regimes than we think b/c, as you point out, they were actually happening before NCLB. I liked this paper for looking at test score complexity: edworkingpapers.com/sites/defaul...

Thanks! I did that (I think) in the second post, but it's weird the link stayed there even when I deleted it from the first.

What Is Measured Is Treasured: The Impact of the No Child Left Behind Act on Nonassessed Subjects In this article, the author reports the results of a national survey taken by state assessment directors on the impact of No Child Left Behind on nonassessed subjects between the years 2001-5. Resu...

My one quibble might be that NCLB likely did have impacts on civics and science scores because schools tended to de-emphasize those subjects to meet NCLB requirements, but even that is not enough to explain everything else!

The disruption affects kids who are absent, kids who are there, and the poor teachers who, as always, are trying to hold it together when no one else will.

"Dismantling" gives them too much cover

We have here the makings of a shadow agency inflicting 4 harms:

1. Depletion (of public funding)
2. Diversion (of funds to private schools)
3. Discrimination (of DEI, LGBTQ+)
4. Destabilization (of public ed to serve #1-3)

Project 2025 goal: privatization

The further dismantling of the Department of Education is bad not only for impeding its Congressionally-approved functions but because of what it signals about how little we actually value education in this country.

Districts are desperate to find tools that help kids and there are many snake oil salesmen out there, but it seems to me that if we're recognizing kindergartners don't need Chromebooks maybe we could also do a little digging about the efficacy of AI in the classroom first.

I find it very interesting that at the same time we're getting some recognition the ed tech is, in fact, not all that and a bag of chips, many districts are going all in on AI.
