Being radicalized increasingly since 2016 has just been banging my head against this post indefinitely.

If you live downwind of a large concentration of birds or cattle, it's time to start thinking about how you will protect yourself if there's an outbreak of bird flu among them.

And how you will know when it happens.

If you're quiet about your disabilities, you get accused of being a fake. If you're outspoken, you get accused of being attention seeking.

Disabled people deserve to be believed and supported without hate. We deserve to be able to thrive.

BC infectious disease doctor reflects on treating teen with #H5N1

"As soon as these results came back, the patient was placed in a negative pressure room and her medical team put on N95 respirators"

ARE TILLAMOOK PRODUCTS MADE WITH PASTEURIZED INGREDIENTS?
All Tillamook products are made with pasteurized milk and cream, with the exception of our aged cheeses. Our aged cheddars (i.e. our Medium Cheddar and longer-aged, or sharper) and Swiss cheese are made with heat-shocked milk, which means that the milk is heated to a slightly lower temperature than a full pasteurization. This process kills the same unwanted bacteria that the pasteurization process does, but it leaves behind some good bacteria that is important for building flavor in these cheeses. Per federal guidelines, we always age these cheeses for a minimum of 60 days to ensure that they are completely safe to eat.

Holy Cow! Some store bought cheese might be contaminated with #BirdFlu.

No one tells you that flash pasteurization may not kill all harmful microbes. Too brief. Too cool.

LDH reports first U.S. H5N1-related human death
Current general public health risk remains low
January 06, 2025
The Louisiana Department of Health reports the patient who had been hospitalized with the first human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), or H5N1, in Louisiana and the U.S. has died. The patient was over the age of 65 and was reported to have underlying medical conditions. The patient contracted H5N1 after exposure to a combination of a non-commercial backyard flock and wild birds.

LDHโ€™s extensive public health investigation has identified no additional H5N1 cases nor evidence of person-to-person transmission. This patient remains the only human case of H5N1 in Louisiana.

The Department expresses its deepest condolences to the patientโ€™s family and friends as they mourn the loss of their loved one. Due to patient confidentiality and respect for the family, this will be the final update about the patient.

What happens in China never just stays in China. There is a surge in influenza A in the U.S. as well this winter. We rarely test whether the virus is conventional flu, or H1N1 swine flu, H5N1 bird flu. But the crowded ERs seen in many places are indications something is afoot. ๐Ÿงต

Where did we go wrong? Allowing a little ol' virus that carries the hallmark of a chronic HIV infection to successfully prey upon the emotions, biases, and prejudices of an untold that resulted in an emotional response so strong that it prevented the scientific response we were deserving of.

Critical Illness in an Adolescent with Influenza A(H5N1) Virus Infection | NEJM Influenza A(H5N1) viruses are an emerging zoonotic threat and have spread widely throughout birds in North America. Recently, influenza A(H5N1) infection led to serious illness in a teenager in Canada...

The authors of the journal article on the 13-year-old with #birdflu in BC are trying to make a point by saying that the kid is unhealthy (BMI over 35 & slight asthma).

If that's all it takes for #H5N1 to require life support to survive, then we're screwed.

B.C. teen no longer critical with avian flu, has been taken off oxygen | Globalnews.ca According to the case summary, the patient was a 13-year-old girl with a history of mild asthma who first reported to a hospital on Nov. 4.

This article about BC teen who ended up in the ICU with bird flu is terrifying

I want to remind people that a well fitted respirator offers excellent protection

Donโ€™t handle sick birds or other wild animals

Our hospital system would NOT be able to provide this level of care if H5N1 goes pandemic

It's possible that the virus could continue to circulate in cows in the state due to the high number of herds together with new available hosts through restocking.

If you stopped masking - please start again. The period between Christmas & New Years is one where people travel, gather & tend to get sick

Masking up could ensure you stay healthy & prevent infecting someone else

Even if you donโ€™t care if YOU get sick - many of us canโ€™t risk it. Mask for us.
