Calcium-ion battery with 1,000-cycle life could challenge lithium-ion dominance Researchers at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have developed a new type of calcium-ion battery that could challenge lithium-ion technology by improving stability and performance. The team built the system using quasi-solid-state electrolytes based on redox-active covalent organic frameworks. Calcium-ion batteries are seen as a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries because calcium is abundant and inexpensive. They also offer a comparable electrochemical window. But practical deployment has been held back by poor ion transport and unstable cycling. Lithium-ion batteries dominate today’s market, powering electric vehicles, grid storage systems, and consumer electronics. However, lithium resources are limited, and improving energy density further is becoming increasingly difficult. That has intensified the search for next-generation battery chemistries. Calcium-ion systems face a core challenge: moving Ca2+ ions efficiently through the electrolyte while maintaining structural stability over many charge and discharge cycles. Without fast ion transport, performance drops and degradation accelerates. Solving the ion bottleneck The HKUST team addressed this issue by designing carbonyl-rich covalent organic frameworks that act as quasi-solid-state electrolytes. These materials create aligned channels that guide calcium ions through the structure. According to the researchers, the new electrolytes achieved ionic conductivity of 0.46 mS cm–1 and Ca2+ transport capability...
