I knew about it, but I’ve never understood it. Seems to me that as a larva, this is a serious disadvantage and alerts predators. If it’s needed for coupling, a larva doesn’t need it, and it can only hurt, I would think.

You’re in Germany, afaik it’s mushroom season now! With the current wet weather, the woods are bursting with mushrooms and slime molds. At least here. You’re further south than me, but should be possible with rain.

Wet, blackened wood with a horizontal ridge of bright sulphur yellow slime mold on it with a structure of irregular holes. It looks fresh and new. A tiny brown globular springtail sits on it, they like to eat it. White slime surrounds the yellow fruiting body in a few places. This is the plasmodial stage of the slime mold.

A ridge of well-formed yellow honeycomb coral slime (Ceratiomyxa porioides).
The white slime around it is the unformed plasmodium, still finding the right spot to bloom.
