The Welsh 20mph default reduced casualties by 25% and insurance costs by £90m. If done in England expect reductions of 15,000 casualties pa and insurance by £2bn pa. Implementation cost would be approx £0.5bn. For comparison, 1st yr depreciation on new cars registered in England in 2024 was £78bn

We are soon to be advocating for cycling outside of London... but hope & plan to make it back for Burns Night!

It really is beyond a joke when people responsible for our collective safety, fail so badly at understanding active travel provision.

A large part of the loss of kids' freedom to play is due to car-priority infrastructure. Car storage, speed & amount on residential streets impede spontaneous play where kids live, & also impacts physical/mental health. Create people (not car-) centric planning & you address childhood right to play.

On our trip to France this summer we told our pre-teen & teen kids to cycle ahead of us and wait where they wanted.
We get back to Newhaven & the cycling provision to Brighton is so comparatively worse... some basic shared pavement but when not provided we still rode on the pavement for our safety.

Yes, this ☝🏻
The issue is that this language is not being used as standard so confusion ensues. Also, it's not easy (as the article mentions) to tell if it's a legal ecycle or if it's an illegal electric motorbike that looks almost the same as a cycle.

Britain’s illegal e-bike boom: desperation, delivery drivers – and unthinkable danger E-bikes can legally travel at 15.5mph. But the fastest the police have seized was capable of 70mph. What will stop the rise of these souped-up and potentially fatal vehicles?

Balanced article on illegal ebikes concludes perhaps it's the "industry that exploits vulnerable people while making huge profits, and online marketplaces that sell unsafe products with no liability or retribution" who need targeting rather than Deliveroo drivers.

Is there an equivalent for sneak driving rather than taking the bicycle? (Especially for short journeys)... There should be shame associated with that too.

Also, you can't book more than one cycle per booking (family of five) using their website in 2025, you have to call them. The cost initially (before a complaint) for cycles+passengers was MORE than taking a car (which obvs takes more space, is heavier and pollutes). It's insane.

Map of the Dalston Liveable Neighbourhood Plan outlining the traffic filter locations, entry and exit points, School Streets and public improvement works.

Consultation to support: the Dalston LN scheme would substantially improve walking & cycling.
But, the proposed filters would leave a route open for through-traffic from Cecilla Rd to Montague Rd, and the scheme should be adjusted to address this.

Recommendations for panniers!
We bought two sets of Ortlieb panniers 6 years ago expecting them to last a lifetime, they claim they're "built to endure". Not so. One set has the same manufacturing fault of torn seams that Ortlieb says are "unrepairable".
Let me know of better manufacturers please!

Notes from good, welcoming public realm in French towns;
1. Colour the separated cycle track surface
2. Introduce fun images (superhero cyclist)
3. Prioritise people walking/cycling at junctions & lights. Zebra crossings on side-streets.
4. Create outside third spaces -> picnic tables for 20+ people

Agree! We didn't have high hopes on exiting the train station as it was an expanse of tram, bus and car lanes, but soon found a cycle track with wonderful cyclist symbols! We were delighted, especially with the superhero cyclist!
The flags of Le Tour were still flying across the streets too.

Followed today by the despair of the Newhaven to Brighton signed National Cycle Route. What an embarrassment that the route advises cyclists to dismount, is either on back roads with appalling potholes & too many parked cars & drivers, or shared narrow footpaths beside heavily trafficked roads. 🤮

I can't get over the amount of high-quality cycling infrastructure in towns outside Paris!
We cycled in Orléans, Blois, Saumur, Tours, Caen & found separated cycle track/cycle priority, low/no motor vehicle city centres & ongoing improvements for cycling including Dutch roundabouts.
Impressed with 🇫🇷

What we know so far about the new road user charges and the end of petrol tax Explainer - The government calls it the biggest change to road funding in 50 years. But what are these RUCs that will replace the petrol tax?

More countries need to introduce RUCs:
"The [NZ] government has recognised reality & is getting on with the transition.
"It isn't fair to have Kiwis who drive less & who can't afford a fuel-efficient car paying more than people who can afford one & drive more often."

On the way from Brighton to Newhaven a few days ago we rode on what must be a historic bus stop bypass.
It was far preferable than our children riding on a high-speed, busy and dangerous road.
Please don't try to ban these important pieces of infrastructure
