Remembering Val Mulkerns, Irish writer, keen observer of the apparently ordinary, whose birthday is today. I met her when I was a 14-year-old brat, and from then until her dying day in 2018 she would inevitably greet me with "Well, what are you writing these days?" 451editions.com/author-val-m...

Sally Rooney? – Irish, of course. Michael Fassbender – Éireannach cinnte. Ach Morgan bocht? Cork man. Easy knowing The Irish Times is published in Dublin!

I had a friend school read trashy romance novels for fun and who collected howlers. I remember "No" he hissed.

An arts and culture venue that will also continue to function as a church. It has existed, literally and figuratively, in the shadow of the cathedral, and I'm looking forward to Werburgh's having an identity of its own.

I am afraid that the music business is a wash with something worse than AI slop – a kind of Uberisation that has creators throwing together the same hackneyed Lego blocks trying to sound original. I did statistical research on Spotify metrics and the originals are indistinguishable from the AI.
