A huge portion of the illegal guns seized in my city were stolen from the parked cars of suburbanites who leave their unsecured firearms (and probably visible valuables) in their cars when they come brave the active war zone to see a concert or eat at a decent restaurant.

I used to work with kids so I tend to notice them because a little part of my brain is like “do I need to be supervising that one?”, I often doing my errands during prime little kids at the store time because I work weird hours and disruptive children are just not something I encounter!

To be clear, I don’t think you should hit your kids but I also understand how a lot of the mistakes that my dad made were due to his love for me and his fears about sending a little black boy out into the world in America.

Kids shouldn’t have to be “tough” I also understand how someone who grew up with slightly older cousins who had to be escorted into school by police when they integrated would place a high value on never letting people see that they have hurt you.

I do think a lot of it can come from
generational trauma — my dad often came from a place of “the world will be cruel to you and it’s my job to prepare you to handle that”, I don’t think he was right but I understand why that’s how he saw things.
