‘A war of the truth’: Europe’s heatwaves are failing to spur support for climate action
Voters may feel hotter summers are ‘too much’ but they appear to tolerate roll-back of policies to stop global heating
I actually no longer believe that people “don’t believe the science” about climate change—they just don’t want to accept the changes necessary. It’s not a problem fixed by better information, because it’s a moral problem of basic selfishness.

I’ve been a lifelong supporter of FPTP, but the prospect of far right majorities based on numbers like this has convinced me it’s time to move to some form of PR.

True. But even so there are particularities to even liberal American culture. I just really value the more European inheritances of our culture.

Depending on how things evolve south of the border, I can imagine a lot of Americans might want to make the move north. But I do worry about the cultural and ideological impact of a major influx.

I get that there are reasons why boycotting US products may not be a good idea, but damn it feels good to see this mass response!

Wow when I saw this post, it was so wild, I had to look up the raw trade data for myself.
Sure enough, U.S. wine exports to Canada have fallen off a cliff:

I think they are both people who behave despicably, and it would be wrong to delight in their public cat fight, but somehow it feels like such a relief that they are attacking each other, and not working together to attack, demean, and harm so many others.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is received in audience by His Majesty King Charles III at Rideau Hall.
Grateful to have an audience with His Majesty King Charles III this afternoon.
Tomorrow, His Majesty will deliver the Speech from the Throne, nearly 70 years after Canada’s Sovereign first opened Parliament. It is an historic honour that matches the weight of our times.

NEW: In a landslide (86%), the Canadian Liberal Party elects Mark Carney as its new leader, he will be the next Canadian PM.
But perhaps not for long. Elections incoming. That said Canadian Liberals were heading for a drubbing before Trump, who has revived their fortunes.

Yes-how many times will the provinces want to keep removing and restocking American liquor from the shelves, for example. And yes, a lot of damage to goodwill and trust.

I’ve been consistently surprised that Canada’s Commonwealth status hasn’t been put to UK govt ministers more. The King (about whom Trump claims “great respect”) is head of state of Canada. Trump is saying he should be head of state of Canada. Is the UK govt neutral on that?

Yes, and the overall damage to cross-border trade from on-again, off-again tariffs. As with other Trump foreign policy maneuvers, allies will seek to move on and make other arrangements.

As I reflect on my most hospitable experiences as a guest, none involve bulletins. They all involve someone helping me: handing me a book, helping me through a strange service, a warm smile. Maybe we are missing hospitality encounters because we think the paper does it. 2/3
