A man, Uncle Jimmy, cutting a turkey with a suspiciously blank expression. He's wearing a chef hat, but it is unclear if he is a trained chef. The text reads: Nobody knows why Uncle Jimmy is mad at birds. Uncle Jimmy looks at the cooked turkey and mutters, "comeuppance." The text continues: But everyone is glad he stands by his pan and always has a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Unattended cooking is the number on cause of home fires.

We don't talk about the birds.

My father, a handful of spoons and his journey into dementia Looking through old cutlery was a safe haven for my dad after he became lost in โ€˜dementia landโ€™

I'm reposting this piece I wrote for The Observer about my father and dementia...and spoons. The conversations I've had since publication with other carers has been very moving. Perhaps if you're a carer you will find some solace in these words:

I'm on round two of parental caring with full energy and no chronic illness, and I cannot imagine how strong you are at your core to do this. The only solve I have is a lot of collaborative movie watching and pre-planning meals for the week to buy myself time, and you're probably already doing that

Death-Defying Dive to the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1995 Before it was illegal, two men pulled off the deepest shipwreck scuba dive in Great Lakes history. Hereโ€™s the inside story of the Edmund Fitzgerald dive.

Itโ€™s Edmund Fitzgerald Day, which mean itโ€™s a good day to read about the dangerous process of diving hundreds of feet down to the wreckage.
