If there's one episode of TV I wish I could force everyone to watch and internalize, it's the 30 Rock where Liz, who has always seen herself as a bullied nerd underdog, finds out she's actually been hated all her life because she's mean.

it's a very important cause obviouslyβ*when* will there *finally* be an interminable daily nous comment thread about trans stuff?!βbut do we want to pursue even a supremely noble end like this by these means? it's a philosophical question warranting its own daily nous comment thread imho

For the record, I donβt think this is Ana rgument against the original post. People shouldnβt be surprised that a lot of people donβt like Ari Aster! A lot of people donβt like a lot of great things

Out of the corpsewarm foyer of heaven steps the sun /
There it is not the immortals, /
But rather the fallen, we hear.
And splendor does not turn towards decay. Our divinity, /
History, has appointed us a grave /
From which there is no resurrection.

Yeah absolutely, no question. It opts for humor over context or fidelity at almost every turn. I think (again, a la Chapo) Aster loathes (fears?) preachiness (one might just say sincerity, were it not for a few very poignant moments), and thatβs probably one of the limits of the film.

Ari Aster is, according to him, a long time chapo listener, and I think the film has that sensibility in its approach to humor and politics (exhibit a: antifa super soldiers). But I donβt think that is both-sidesism, just an attempt to present a broader view of the fray itself with cynical humor
20.07.2025 14:35 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
Yeah it definitely leans in favor of humor over side-taking, but I wouldnβt call it both sides-ism. The protestors are unbearably cringe-y (esp the one who turns right wing!) but they arenβt evil or violent just cringe
