When Kairin bought her hybrid car I mothballed my Honda and started to drive her (newer) Toyota. This week I decided to make sure it would still run in case the kid gets a license, so I charged the battery and...laboriously...put it back in the car. It would not start so I had to use a jump starter.

I liked them, but they were related to my research at the time. There is a movie, but it is a rather free adaptation of the first novel.

I have read everything Irvine Welsh has written. The novels were an important source for a book that I wrote on club culture in film, TV & literature. Have you read Alan Warner's Morvern Callar & its sequel? They are a proofreader's nightmare.

I spent a sabbatical and went to conferences every few years in Glasgow so even I could tell that the sub writers were just giving up in places. The subs are just an add on that I use for most TV now to fill in for gaps in my hearing.

We started watching the UK show The Field of Blood last night. It is a well written crime serial set in Glasgow in the 1980s. We are watching with subs as old people often do, and it is amusing to see that the sub writers often use "inaudible" to account for the Glaswegian accent. (+Not-US TV.)

It was hot yesterday and I ran out of homemade tortillas so I decided to make a new batch with our portable induction cooktop. Halfway through, the cooker died and I had to heat up the kitchen with the conventional electric range. When modern electronics fail they tend to do it emphatically.

I presume that postings in medical institutions have special rules for grammar. (...like the missing diacritics in all caps.)

ten pages on the one relevant concept.

Does that include edited collections that you only read the chapter directly related to your current research. Or what about those long studies by famous scholars that only have ten pages one relevant concept?

I have noticed this too. I had a full career as an academic and enjoyed most of the aspects of the job, but I noticed that many of my studets who went on to get PhDs found aspects of the work environment unacceptable. (Moving to a new location, research limitations from teaching and service, etc.)

I planted zucchini (courgette) but it appears that the seeds have decided that we wanted shade trees They are refusing to provide food.

We have been watching the Finnish show Detective Maria Kallio lately. It is a good European style police procedural; not Nordic Noir and different from UK and US forms of the genre. We require subs as there are only short English phrases and the odd German loan word here and there.

Beautiful location. There are few things more enjoyable than a forest run.

Karin has been away from home every day this week helping to organize the local dog show. When she comes home in the evening she is exhausted, but I believe she is enjoying herself. Here is her interview with the local TV station: ckpgtoday.ca/2025/07/25/d...

Garmin watch report of today's run.

Garmin watch report of today's run.

Shortly after finishing my PhD (age 36) I discovered that distance running was good for my body & mind. Whenever possible I run every second day and I am happy that I can still run at 71. I felt like crap before I started to day but now I have an endorphin high & am ready for the rest of the day.

We have also been watching another fantasy / horror show filmed in Eastern Canada. The Institute is based on a Stephen King novel and features children with mild superpowers (telekinesis etc.) who are kidnaped and trained. Partially filmed in the small NS town that is on my birth certificate.

We have been watching the new SyFy show Revival & like it. It is a horror / fantasy that uses the relatively new trope of intelligent zombies. (Warm Bodies, The Returned, Glitch, Resurrection, etc.) Revival is filmed in New Brunswick so Canadian content.

This comment is a response to a note about Duke Uni making professors' employment dependent upon grants. Someone replied that it was reasonable & I responded...without any snide comments about trade schools vs university and the value of cultural heritage.

Some subjects don't get many grants. History, Arts, pure mathematics, astronomy. Some are building blocks of more practical disciplines (engineering, psychology, medicine, advertising, public administration, law etc.)

It is another warm day a
& I have discovered a new dog excavation site. They have been digging between the shed and fence & endangering the sprinkler system. I filled it in with mulch.

I use Google assistant to check every time I get home. I went to school when Canada was Imperial and Uni after we went metric. I run about 10 K every second day and then ask Google "what is 10.43 K in miles?" Watch out with the not feeling, that is when you get knee injuries. (been there....)

It was before every educated German had some English and we were speaking German, but I have an accent so he used the "simple" vocab that he used with child patients. I learned German as an adult so I did not have any idea what children called those parts...

Terminology is one of the great barriers to communication. I also do not know this term. I had to go to a urologist in Germany once (UTI) & he decided that he would use German baby-talk terms to ask questions since I was a foreigner. I asked him to use the Latin words as they were closer to English.

I live in Canada, but I like to listen to BBC radio programs (World Business Report, News Hour & Friday Night Comedy) so I use whatever Internet client the BBC prefers. Over the years that client has changed a number of times, and now are switching to "the BBC app"; new interface, many menus.

We started watching Les Disparus de la foret noir on Prime last night. The action is set in Germany & France, but all of the dialogue is in French. It's weird to see German police & military characters speak in French unlike US shows (& 'Allo 'Allo) use of accents to indicate other languages.
