Dazed and confused 24/7/365 but very much interested in seeing how it all turns out. Love: short stories, my dog, pizza, naps, art, esp. Paul Klee.

The judges would also have accepted β€œNo canto” or any iteration on anything that sounds like can do

A New York times with the headline β€œ6 Republican Voters on Trump’s Lethal Boat Strikes”, followed by a sub-header that says β€œWe’ve been checking in with this group on their impressions of the Trump administration. It is followed by six photographs of individuals the Times talked to. The whole articlle, IMO, is similar to the standing feature called β€œAmerican Voices” in the The Onion. Except the The Onion is a satirical publication.

Why the The New York Timrs stompin’ on the The Onion’s β€œAmerican Voices” real estate?

As a base line, the opposition must unify. American history offers an example: In the Jim Crow South, the conservative Democratic Party engaged in rampant voter intimidation, ballot stuffing and other authoritarian tactics to manipulate elections throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In response, fractured opposition groups in some Southern states β€” most prominently, Republicans and Populists in North Carolina β€” formed β€œfusion” coalitions to increase their chances of victory. In North Carolina’s 1894 and 1896 elections, the fusion slates bridged racial and party divides and achieved remarkable gains, although these victories were later undone through a combination of violence and the large-scale disenfranchisement of Black voters.

Fusion is still banned in most states, it was done for exactly this sort of reason. @centerforballotfreedom.org is involved in some promising litigation to bring it back in several states arguing, correctly, it violates state con. equivalents of the First Amendment.
