The APPG Play documents highlight the regional unevenness of England’s adventure playgrounds.

Just one in the whole of the north-east (the amazing Shiremoor Adventure Playground).

1. Why & how long has the Coach Station been shut? @northeastptug.bsky.social

2. Why are the coaches using JDSt - it has no facilities?

3. Why can’t the Council stop them?

The actual coach station is near the Redheugh Bridge - much better to stop there than trail emissions through Grainger Town.

The Northumberland Line accepts POP cards - the Hexham Line doesn’t. Hence the cheaper fares.

The simple solution to this problem would be to extend POP to the Hexham Line.

Even better to extend POP to local services on the East Coast mainline & the Sunderland Line - as well as the buses!

Plea to end 'two-tier' transport system hurting areas cut off from Metro The North East mayor has been urged to revive the long-held ambition of creating a modern public transport network for the West End of Newcastle

Compare and contrast - Newcastle actually did have the vision for trams earlier in the century, but the plans was scrapped for buses.

37% of households in our city don’t have access to a car, it would be good if their transport needs got as much attention as free parking in hospitals.

Case Study: Nottingham Workplace Parking Levy How it has reduced congestion in the city In 2012, Nottingham took the unprecedented step to introduce a Workplace Parking Levy (WPL). Covering the whole City Council administrative area, the levy was...

There was a lot of opposition to the WPL. When it was first announced.
But the benefits speak for themselves after 14 years.

We often talk about your trams & the levy in the NE. The West End of Newcastle has wanted the Tyne & Wear Metro extended to that area for decades or failing that trams. It’s spoken of as being too difficult - but your trams show how it can be done.

This is a great example of the benefits the Nottingham workplace parking levy has brought to that city.

More like a reflection on an axis - they are on the positive side for transport (multimodal exploiting modern technology) whereas we’re on the negative (hard to walk & cycle with an air pollution problem).

He’s right in that local councillors do work hard re litter picking, planting stuff, removing graffiti, reporting potholes etc

But before the elections we would like to hear from different parties on air pollution, rubbish & recycling, increasing walking & cycling, funding the parks- the hard stuff

We do need more bike racks at the RVI though - members report that it’s difficult to find an empty one & not uncommon for people to have to use the fence. In a city hospital near an Air Quality Management Area it makes sense to help those who can to cycle to leave the car park for those who can’t.

Pedestrian Priority on Gosforth High Street - SPACE for Gosforth New proposals for Gosforth High Street have been released Β by Newcastle City Council today. These proposals include pedestrian-priorityΒ crossings on side streets, revised parking arrangements and a re...

Really interesting read - Newcastle Council consulted on improving the street ends on GosforthHighSt 10 years ago but didn’t implement it. Disappointing as current layout does affect pedestrians eg 1 junction if you are pushing a pram (so can’t stand at the kerb) you can’t see approaching traffic.

What makes side road junctions pedestrian-friendly? ForewordThis post has a companion written by Robert Weetman. We have been working collaboratively on something which we think needs to be more widely known, but we also thought it might be fun and …

In my work on side road junction designs, we came up with a model which can be simply measured.

If rules H2/170 are a good thing (they are) what are the conditions we need to create where drivers are "likely" to give way to pedestrians?

New pothole machine sees 3,000sqm of Gateshead roads patched up in three months The arrival of the Pothole Pro has been hailed a success thus far with 3,000sqm of roads improved

We’re definitely seeing some deep / large potholes in #Gosforth & we’re pleased you’re talking about this as we need councillors to pothole maintenance. We were wondering how #Newcastle is managing compared to #Gateshead given they have their new pothole busting machine.

No - this was tried after Project Orpheus was abandoned & did not solve congestion & air pollution. Buses cannot replace rail.

What has worked exceptionally well re local transport recently is … the train (the Northumberland Line). If you want to understand why read @garethdennis.uk β€˜s book.

A green and silver tram in Nottingham.

A green and silver tram in Nottingham.

3. If you want to write about feasibly expanding the Metro / funding trams - why don’t you write about the Nottingham workplace parking levy & how they used it to fund trams (see picture). If we really can’t have the Metro extended to the West End we would like these instead!

2. What has worked exceptionally well in the NE is reinstating rail - the original Metro, the Sunderland Metro extension & the Northumberland Line all testify to this. What we need in the future is more rail - eg better local services on the East Coast Main line.

Road is funded so why isn’t rail?

1. If the author had attended @garethdennis.uk β€˜s talk in Newcastle last year, he would know that this is not a good solution.

Additionally, this has already been tried in Newcastle when Project Orpheus was abandoned - & - judging by collisions & air pollution - this has not worked.

Important news for #Newcastle folk - the latest on the Exhibition Park cafΓ© closure.

Closure of cafΓ© = closure of its toilets.

This is important for the accessibility to the park & its activities (especially Town Moor parkrun & Town Moor Junior parkrun) as Exi Park has no public toilets.

2/ Lots of people like to tell us that we don’t need any more cycle routes because we have the east route - but they rarely tell us how we can get from the route to anywhere you actually want to go via a safe cycle route (probably because you can’t unless you can teleport).

03.02.2026 21:53 β€” πŸ‘ 3    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

1/ Using parallel routes doesn’t work. There is a route east of the High St, but there is no cycle routes, it isn’t a LTN, people speed at the south end lots of cars at rush hour & it has no shops. There isn’t a parallel route on the west for the full length - so you end up back on the High St…
