β€˜It seemed like time stopped’: Marimar Martinez recounts shooting by immigration agent at Washington forum Marimar Martinez’s testimony comes after weeks of blowback against the immigration enforcement raids that have rattled cities like Chicago.

β€œI am Renee Good, I am Alex Pretti, I am Silverio Villegas-Gonzalez, I am Keith Porter,” she said. β€œThis needs to stop now. How many more lives must be lost before meaningful action is taken?”

What's been weird to learn is that other leaders of institutions act the same way. Some of them hoard and protect their influence like it's money because they, too, are rich. You don't get rich by giving your money away and (they seem to believe) you don't get powerful by exercising your power. But, in fact, that is often how power works: using power can help build power. At the very least, power holds no value unless it is exercised, which alone is a valid reason to exercise it. If you are powerful but never use your power, you are not powerful.
I'm talking here primarily about the huge, obvious loci of power β€” the centers of power that exist in part to serve as checks on other centers of power.
Congress vis-a-vis the presidency. The media relative to the government. Higher education in contrast to misinformation. But they often aren't serving as checks on what's unfolding, or are obviously and bizarrely using their power only sparingly, garden hoses aimed at protecting their own homes from the wildfire.
So it's left to individuals, who have stepped up where institutions have not.

I wrote about Minnesota and ICE and how average Americans are reclaiming the power that the administration is abusing.

I have confirmed the gist of this report out of federal court in Minnesota today from a source familiar.

If you have more information about the District of Minnesotaβ€”either the court or the U.S. Attorney's Officeβ€”and how they are handling all of this, please reach out. I am at crg.32 on Signal.

One helluva story about administrative subpoenas.

My take is that I understand that emotions can get heated, especially in the immediate aftermath of something outrageous and provocative and things happen. And it’s not really good or bad, it’s just human.

But if you burn my house down, I hate you.

BREAKING: @ajc.com on Tuesday evening said it will lay off approximately 50 staffers, about 15% of its headcount, as it seeks to cut costs and marshal resources to invest in its growth.

The AJC published its last print edition on 12/31. About half of those laid off will come from the newsroom.

DHS Hunts Down 67-Year-Old U.S. Citizen Who Criticized Them in Email The Department of Homeland Security is using a little-known tool to go after its critics.

Floored by this story. A man wrote a pollite email to a federal prosecutor objecting to the deportation of an Afghan seeking asylum. DHS responded with an administrative warrant to get the man's info from Google, then visited his home to intimidate him.
