People like Mosley are always going to exist. Politicians like Streeting think they can be the 'nice' face of xenophobia. But all they're really doing is making Mosley's arguments sound like they have a point, which they never have.

Language like Streeting's is why people turn to the right. Labour KNOW that immigration is good for the economy and necessary for the NHS. But they also think they can win some extra votes by pandering to people's fears.

Except for that paper going round using "Bayesian Analysis" to retrofit people's COVID lab leak theories. That one's definitely deranged.

Realising that I've brought a lot of counterproductive Twitter-isms with me to this platform. Describing things as 'deranged' was a good way to get attention but I'd rather not contribute to bringing BlueSky discourse down the gutter too.

Also utterly deranged from the country still reeling from the exodus of healthcare workers post-Brexit.

This is the energy Europe needs to project. As always it's those with the most to lose who are actually willing to make the hard choices, while the privileged cower from actually standing for something.

Appreciate the response. Those voters certainly exist, and I can imagine why that activism might turn them against an AoC or Corbyn type. But without the mass propoganda, why would 'gender ideology' or Critical Race Theory turn any otherwise centre-left voter against Harris or Starmer?

As others have commented I think these kinds of pieces, while well intentioned, provide too much cover for a backlash that has always been reactionary, bad faith, and manufactured.

To pick one example: it was conservatives, not progressives or trans people, who turned bathrooms into a culture war.

AOC: I don’t care what Elon Musk is doing behind the presidential seal, but in this country we hate Nazis. Kind of like a foundational defining thing. Two of the foundational things about American history is that we beat the confederates and we beat the Nazis.

I will never stop being mad about how the media has treated the anti-trans movement as a group of ordinary people with legitimate concerns rather than the obvious frothing bigots they are.

Which is to say, I can understand why someone like AOC might feel the need to take that different stance.

Sort of. I think I'm just particularly worried about creating a narrative that obfuscates the dangers of these platforms because it might be 'less bad'. That said I'm not a US politician so I don't have anything to lose by alienating the people who actually like TikTok.

I suppose what I'm arguing is that none of them are benign. It just so happens that politically (and cynically as you point out) action on TikTok was feasible while on Meta wasn't.

Perhaps we don't need to ban them, but we certainly shouldn't write their propaganda for them.
