This is not a minor issue: it’s a serious threat to democracy. We’re rapidly transitioning into a world where, as long as you support the president, you can be above the law; if you’re in the opposition, you have a target on your back. Opposition can’t survive under these conditions.

Heather Humphreys was ‘unsympathetic’ to fears over change to wildlife law, say activists Campaigners had ‘no access for discussion’ on ‘damaging’ Bill extending hedgerow-cutting season

Ms Humphreys claims that the scope of her “Slash & Burn Bill” was restricted to roadside hedgerows is totally false. The bill looked to remove the protection from all hedgerows in August & allow burning of vegetation in March. Totally dishonest & unpresidential

The max fine for a company who causes a fish kill through illegal pollution is usually just €5,000. And that's if anyone is even held responsible 👎

To actually stop nature destruction, we need a system with strong regulation and penalties.

The Irish Times view on Ireland’s waterways: an ecological death Nutrients from agriculture and poor wastewater treatment have led to 48 per cent of waters being rated below minimum standards

'[this] could not have come at a worse time for the Gov. & farmers as Ireland attempts to retain its EU nitrates derogation.. The EPA findings undermine the case for retention ..The Min for Ag has called for an extension..This now looks like a specious argument.'

This, while shocking, could be fixed so quickly. It's simply not good enough, and our waterways are paying the price.
